PREP VOLLEYBALL: Post Falls tops Lake City ... in five!

COEUR d’ALENE — Post Falls and Lake City went five sets in their 6A Inland Empire League volleyball match Tuesday night. 

Should we be surprised? 

Visiting Post Falls pulled off the reverse sweep, beating the Timberwolves 23-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-14, 15-8. 

“Well, when we play Lake City we expect to play five sets," Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “I’m really proud of our resilience tonight. Lake City came out and kept us off balance for the first two sets. We couldn’t run our offense and we struggled to find our rhythm. However, we finally decided to play our tempo and found our rhythm to finish off the match.”

Last year, all three meetings between the two teams went five sets. 

Junior Teresa Smith totaled 15 kills, 14 digs and five aces for Post Falls (4-4, 1-1 6A IEL). Zuri Blood added seven kills, Claire Ziegler 18 assits and 14 digs, Lucy Carr 17 assists and 14 digs, Tiffany Foxx six blocks and three aces, Malia Uemoto four blocks, Mia Carr 14 digs. “Teresa Smith was phenomenal tonight," Barkley said. “She was able to find the holes in the Lake City defense and was a digging machine tonight. This was a big win for us.” 

For Lake City (4-8, 0-1), Camryn Woodman had 14 kills, 22 digs and three blocks, Ella Jeanselme 15 kills, 24 digs and three aces, Kate Moglia 19 assists and five kills, Miranda FitzSimmons 20 assists, five kills and two aces.  

“It stings, obviously, to not close those matches out but we had glimmers of some really good things,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “I’m so proud of the way these girls keep their heads up through adversity and continue to show up for each other. Another big test on Thursday, so back to work tomorrow to prepare.” 

On Thursday, Lake City travels to Coeur d’Alene for a 6A IEL match.  

Post Falls visits Moscow on Saturday.

Lewiston 

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Kaylee Paulson had nine kills and eight digs to lead a balanced attack as the host Vikings swept the Bengals 25-17, 25-14, 25-19 in nonleague play at Viking Court. 

Gianna Callari had 10 kills and three blocks for Coeur d’Alene (12-0). Hannah Shafer had 18 assists, Camryn Farrar seven kills, Bridget Maiani 11 digs, Embree McKeown seven digs, Eva Callari 14 assists and two aces. 

“Maren (Larson) had an outstanding night, hitting .500 in the middle,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Our sitters did a great job distributing the ball and keeping the defense off-balance. We stayed aggressive, trusted each other, and everyone played a part in our offensive success.” 

Lewiston is 7-6. 

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lake City on Thursday in a 6A Inland Empire League match. 

Lakeland d. 

Moscow 

MOSCOW — Junior Jolie Warren had 12 kills as the visiting Hawks swept the Bears 25-11, 25-23, 25-21 in 5A Inland Empire League play at Bear Den. 

Alyssa Ryckman had 11 kills for Lakeland (3-3, 2-0 5A IEL). Jaeli Hoffman added 13 assists and four aces, Kindell Day 17 assists, Chloe Neff 11 digs, Raygen Dutton six blocks. 

“We started the night with energy, aggressive swings, and momentum to take control of the first set,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “Jolie led the attack, Dutton was dominant at the net and Jaeli added pressure from the service line. We struggled to keep momentum in the second and third sets and couldn’t find our rhythm like the first set, but we remained calm and composed to get the sweep.” 

Moscow is 7-3, 1-2. 

Lakeland travels to Sandpoint on Thursday in a 5A IEL match.

St. Maries 

WALLACE — Junior Kayden Stutzke had 18 assists, four aces and five digs as the host Miners swept the Lumberjacks 25-11, 25-11, 25-14 in nonleague play at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

Kylee Phillips added nine kills, 10 digs and three aces for Wallace (6-2. Megan Hull had nine kills and eight digs, Khepri Wood seven kills and two blocks. 

For St. Maries (1-9), Dimercia Spooner had eight kills and three digs, Taryn Brebner four assists, three digs and two kills, Letty Smith five kills, Lyssa Watkins 10 assists, Brooklyn Scheffelmaier five digs. 

“Despite the losses we saw so much from the girls tonight,” St. Maries coach Tammie Woster said. “The scores were super close to the scores from the first time we met. They really were following the ball and moved better than ever. We had some super volleys. The times that they are in sync with each other is getting more frequent. It's been a fun week watching them.” 

Wallace plays host to Genesis Prep on Thursday in a Scenic Idaho Conference match. 

St. Maries returns to action Saturday at home vs. Grangeville in Central Idaho League play.

Genesis Prep 

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Kate Clemens had 18 assists as the host Saints beat the Jaguars 25-19, 25-23, 25-11 in nonleague play at Holy Family Catholic School. 

Maddie Junkin added eight kills and three aces for Coeur du Christ (3-3), and Espi Klocko had 10 digs.  

“I was really happy with how we finished out the night,” Coeur du Christ coach Natalie Kiefer said. “In the second set, we just made far too many unforced errors. Thankfully, we squeaked it out. But by the third set, we were playing much more at our tempo and with more confidence. I am very happy with how the girls made some adjustments, especially Angelica (Ross) and Maddie hitting outside. They were forced to use some different shots and tools in their toolbox to put the ball down and really showed what smart players they are.” 

On Thursday, Genesis Prep (0-6) travels to Wallace tor a Central Idaho League match, and Coeur du Christ visits Kootenai in North Star League play.

HARRISON FLATS — The host Warriors fell to the Wampus Cats 25-17, 25-12, 25-17 in nonleague play. 

Kootenai (0-5) was led by the serving of Iva Hugo, the hitting of Brooklyn Charles and the blocking of Tyla Dittman, Warriors coach Elexus Moore-Rich said. 

Clark Fork is 4-4. 

Kootenai plays host to Coeur du Christ on Thursday in North Star League play.

PLUMMER — The match was rescheduled for Sept. 29.
