PREP SOCCER: Coeur d'Alene boys wake up, respond late

LEWISTON — Coeur d’Alene was knocking on the door early, and often, at Lewiston’s Walker Field in the first half. 

Once the Vikings found the key, they opened it for everyone. 

Junior midfielder Ethan Luna scored two second half goals, part of five unanswered goals for the Vikings in a 5-1 win over the Bengals. 

“We were knocking on the door a lot in the first half,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “It took some time to work through some adversity and we found ourselves offsides a lot (10 times in the match). After Lewiston scored, it kind of woke us up a little bit and once we scored, it really started to flow. I was happy to see us respond to the adversity again.” 

Coeur d’Alene (6-2), which has played its first eight matches on the road, makes its Viking Field debut Saturday vs. Sandpoint. 

Lewiston is 3-4.

MOSCOW — Senior Reilly Smith scored twice for the Timberwolves in a win over the Bears at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. 

“I’m proud of the effort today,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “We got a lot of our boys some solid minutes, and that’s huge for the growth and development of this young squad.” 

Junior Henry Weimer-Earnest had a goal and two assists for Lake City (4-4-1), which travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday. 

Moscow (5-4) travels to Lakeland on Saturday.

RATHDRUM — Senior midfielder Cade Pittman was up for the challenge presented by his coaches earlier this week. 

Pittman scored two second-half goals for the Hawks in a 5A Inland Empire League win over the Trojans at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“He’d been quiet the last couple of games and we needed him to step up,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “And he did today. He was scrapping and scored a couple of goals. It was really nice to see him get going a little bit.” 

Seniors Riley Jones and Ethan Hunt also had goals for Lakeland (4-4, 2-2 5A IEL), which hosts Moscow on Saturday. 

Post Falls (0-9, 0-6) faces Coeur d’Alene Charter next Wednesday at The Fields in Post Falls.

COEUR d’ALENE — Playing in their third game in as many days, the shorthanded Vikings found a way under the lights at Viking Stadium. 

Senior Nora Ryan scored on an assist from junior Izzy Grimmett in the 64th minute for the Vikings in a win over the Bengals. 

Coeur d’Alene fell to Lake City 1-0 on Tuesday, then beat Timberlake 3-0 on Wednesday at home. 

“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “It was our third game in a row and the injuries and sickness continues to pile up. We’re pulling up girls from JV, but whatever came their way, they grinded it out and found a way to win it.” 

Lewiston (5-4) outshot Coeur d’Alene (6-3-2) 14-12, but senior Macy Walters stopped all 14 shots for Coeur d’Alene. 

“They were coming at us,” Vredenburg said. “Macy had a great game with a lot of big saves. I’m really proud of the girls for finding a way to win.” 

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lake City next Tuesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore forward Ava Roberts scored in the 38th minute on an assist from senior defender Kamryn Kirk for the Timberwolves in a win over the Bears at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex. 

“Both keepers played really well today,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We weren’t really sharp today and Moscow is a gritty group and they play hard. Coming off the Coeur d’Alene game two days ago, we didn’t have a lot of grit and focus. We did enough to win a game, but it definitely wasn’t one of our better games for sure.” 

Lake City (8-0-1) hosts Coeur d’Alene next Tuesday.
