PREP ROUNDUP: Viking boys finish sixth at California meet

IRVINE, Calif. — Coeur d’Alene sophomore Wyatt Morgenstern was the top local finisher in the top boys race at the Woodbridge Classic at the Great Park on Saturday, finishing 12th in 14 minutes, 10.4 seconds. 

Senior Mitchell Rietze was 13th in 14:11 for the Vikings, who finished sixth out of 37 teams in the Sweepstakes race, which included the top boys teams at the meet.

Coeur d’Alene was ranked eighth in the latest national rankings by DyeStat.com. Herriman (Utah), ranked fourth nationally, won the boys team race with 202 points. Jesuit of Carmichael, Calif., ranked second, finished second with 222 points. 

Sophomore Rowan Henry was 40th (14:29.5), sophomore Blaise Howard 124th (15:05.6), junior Gabe Heule 197th (15:29.3) for the Vikings. Freshman Andrew Grady finished in 16:16.1 for Coeur d’Alene. 

Coeur d’Alene freshman Victoria Howard was eighth out of 218 runners in the Gold Varsity A girls race, helping lead the Vikings to the team title in that race. 

Senior Dakota Keyworth was 12th (17:45.6), senior Olivia May 18th (18:01.4), sophomore Lillie Dance 41st (18:50.9) and freshman Gracie McVey 46th (18:53.6) for Coeur d’Alene, which finished with 89 points. Freshman Kate Baker finished in 20:28.5 and junior Grace Callahan in 20:39.4 to round out the finishers for Coeur d’Alene. 

Charter's Carr sixth in

Mountain West Classic

MISSOULA, Mont. — Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Annabelle Carr was the top local finisher in the Mountain West Classic at the University of Montana Golf Course, finishing sixth in the girls race in 18 minutes, 53.81 seconds. 

Timberlake junior Lola Eggleston was 20th in 19:33.65. 

Addison Kegel of Billings Central Catholic won the girls race in 17:33.03. Bozeman (Mont.) won the girls team title. 

Timberlake junior Caleb Royce, who finished 29th, was the top local boys finisher in 16:30.43. 

Miles Halvorsen of Bozeman won the boys race in 15:17.20.  

Mead of Spokane won the boys team title.

LEWISTON — Less than 48 hours after handing Coeur d’Alene its first loss, Lake City fell to Lewiston 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 15-12. 

“We didn’t show up ready to play at the standard we’re capable of, which is frustrating coming off of a good performance on Thursday, but our eyes are forward and ready to reset,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “Lewiston applied pressure and was very low error. A good lesson learned.” 

Junior Camryn Woodman had 19 kills and 14 digs for Lake City (5-9). Ella Jeanselme added 13 kills and 11 digs, Kate Moglia 19 assists and six kills, Sofia Peressini 19 digs. 

Lewiston is 9-5. 

Lake City plays host to Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday.

MOSCOW — An early morning bus trip for the Trojans resulted in a 28-26, 25-14, 25-17 victory over the Bears at Bear Den. 

Junior Teresa Smith had 11 kills and sophomore Zuri Blood added 10 kills and two blocks for Post Falls (5-4). Lucy Carr had 16 assists and five aces, Mia Carr 16 digs, Claire Ziegler 15 assists, Rylie Gump three blocks. 

“Another great win for us this morning,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said of the 10 a.m. start. “Traveling early in the morning is always hard to get the energy going. Our girls battled hard to pull out that first set and settled in for the rest of the match. Moscow has some big blockers. Our girls adjusted their attacking in the last two sets and amped up their serves to make the difference in the match.” 

Moscow is 6-5. 

Post Falls plays host to Shadle Park on Monday, its fourth (of five) Greater Spokane League opponents of the season.

GRANGEVILLE — The visiting Lumberjacks fell to the Bulldogs 25-9, 25-14, 25-17 in Central Idaho League play. 

“We started strong but couldn’t hold on,” St. Maries coach Tammie Woster said. “We have worked on setters and middles this week and it was good to see them bring it to the court today. We also saw great serves today.” 

St. Maries (1-10, 0-3 CIL) plays host to Priest River on Thursday.

RATHDRUM — Senior forward Ethan Hunt converted a game-tying penalty kick in the 75th minute for the Hawks, who played to a 5A Inland Empire League draw with the Bears at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“It was a good, physical, back and forth game,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “We played well in the first half and came out a little slow in the second. We’ve got to play a full game and put in a full 80 minutes. In the last 10 minutes, we were getting good pressure and getting good shots.”

We moved the ball around nicely.”

“We struggled connecting in the first half, but were able to start talking and looking up for those passing lanes during the second half,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “This allowed for a much better build up to goal. All of our girls got some good minutes today and I saw a lot of growth from those coming off the bench. Our goal scorers took advantage during parts of the game they were on the field, which always makes for a successful outing.”
