PREP SOCCER: Sandpoint boys find stride in 3-1 victory over Coeur d’Alene
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 months, 3 weeks AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 22, 2025 5:00 PM
BOYS
Sandpoint 3, Coeur d'Alene 1
COEUR d'ALENE — Senior Logan McGrann, sophomore exchange student Alvaro Santos, and junior Knox Williams all scored as the Bulldogs got revenge on the Vikings in a 6A/5A Inland Empire League showdown held Saturday at Coeur d'Alene High.
"I thought we came out of the gates really strong," Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. "We've been working as a team on sticking together and leaning into our collective strengths — the boys very much did that today."
During the 30th minute, Santos had a hustle play in the box which resulted in a penalty kick. McGrann took the kick and fired it into the top right-hand corner of the net to break the ice.
However, in the second half, Coeur d'Alene found nylon and the equalizer during the 57th minute, but the Bulldogs regrouped. Instead of defending, they pushed forward for two more goals and controlled the game from that point on.
McGrann, during the 63rd minute, took a corner kick and Santos rose up and headed it into the bottom left-hand corner of the net to give Sandpoint a 2-1 advantage. Coach Anderson said that specific result he was especially happy with, considering the Bulldogs have been working on their set pieces heavily in practice this past week.
During the 77th minute, after a beautiful combination play in the middle, junior Knox Williams stepped up and finished off a rebound to seal the deal.
"From then on out, I thought we saw the game out very well, kept cool heads, and earned a team victory," coach Anderson said of the final minutes. "Very happy for the boys and very proud of their effort."
Junior goalkeeper Landon Brinkmeier stopped four shots on goal in the win, most of which coach Anderson said were phenomenal efforts on balls that appeared to be curling into the net.
Sandpoint (8-2-1) travels to Moscow on Thursday for a 5A Inland Empire League matchup.

GIRLS
Mead 3, Sandpoint 1
SPOKANE — Senior Elia Howard scored the Lady Bulldogs' lone goal as Sandpoint fell by a two-goal margin to the Lady Panthers in their final non-league game of the season Friday at Mead High.
Sandpoint gave up two goals during a five-minute span and a penalty kick with 10 seconds remaining in the loss. Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said despite that, he thought his team played well, with some great contributions coming from numerous players.
"We just need to take care of the ball a little more out of the midfield," coach Brinkmeier said. "Izzy (Stark) had a great game and is really coming into her own. We have three very important games coming up. We're hoping to get everyone healthy for our first test."
Junior goalkeeper Izzy Stark recorded eight saves in between the posts for Sandpoint (2-7-1), which travels to Moscow for a 5A Inland Empire League on matchup Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs tied the Lady Bears by a score of 0-0 earlier this season.
