Battling the entire match, the Troy Lady Trojan volleyball squad fell to Eureka in three sets Thursday, Sept. 18.

Troy, led by first-year head coach Kimberly Klin, led briefly in the first set, 6-5, on a serve by Ainsley Hultron. But Eureka rallied behind three straight service aces by  Haidyn Guckenberg. Overall, the Lady Lions scored five straight points to lead 11-6.

Klin called timeout and Guckenberg’s next serve was off mark, allowing the Lady Trojans a chance to rally. Senior Halle Wallace served up and ace and Troy pulled within 12-11.

But Eureka never surrendered the lead and claimed a 25-17 win. The Lady Lions had five service aces in the set.

In the second set, Eureka jumped out to leads of 8-0 and 9-1 before the Lady Trojans rallied, closing to within three points, 15-13. Wallace served for three straight points to tie it at 17-17.

Three straight points by Eureka resulted in a 20-17 lead and a Troy timeout. The Lady Trojans forged a tie when senior Mellissa Laffoon served an ace. Eureka called timeout, but Laffoon served another ace and Troy led 23-22 as the partisan home crowd roared.

But a sideout gave the Lady Lions the ball back and Aubrey Casazza served two aces to end it, 25-23.

Eureka claimed the match with a 25-14 win in the third set.

The Lady Lions stayed unbeaten at 4-0 and are 1-0 in District 7B action. Troy fell to 2-2 and 0-1.

The Lady Trojans return to action Thursday, hosting Bonners Ferry.
