COEUR d’ALENE — A man accused of sexually assaulting a family member is facing a felony charge.

The 36-year-old Kootenai County resident is charged with incest, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. The Press is not naming the man at this time because doing so could identify the reporting party.

The charges stem from August, when a Hayden woman reported to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office that the man, who is closely related to her, had sexually assaulted her several months before.

The woman told investigators that her relative had provided her with alcohol during a party in late May. She said she went to bed and woke with her relative beside her, which caused her to fear that he had assaulted her while she was unconscious, according to court records. She told police that her relative had sexually assaulted her in the past.

In text messages reviewed by police, the man allegedly described having sexual contact with his relative and sent her an explicit photo of himself, according to court records.

Police obtained a $100,000 warrant for the man’s arrest. He was booked into the Kootenai County jail late last week and has since posted bail.
