KELLOGG FOOTBALL

- 9/19

Kellogg 56 Timberlake 48 OT

SPIRIT LAKE — The Wildcats spoiled Timberlake’s homecoming with a dramatic win in what felt like the high school equivalent of 2016 Oklahoma versus Texas Tech at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field.

Porter Lewis and Ryker Brennan may not be Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes, but their offenses stuffed the stat sheet, combining for over 800 yards of total offense and 15 touchdowns.

Trailing by eight with less than two minutes to play, Lewis’ deep shot was picked off by a Timberlake defender inside the 10-yard line... Game over, right?

Wrong.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty stopped the clock and pushed the Tigers back, and on the ensuing play, Timberlake coughed up the ball, and Kellogg suddenly had life again. Sophomore Cyrus Reed caught a short pass and rumbled to the 10-yard line before Kellogg’s timeout with just seconds remaining. Lewis then found senior Draedan Taylor for his third touchdown reception of the night to force overtime.

In previous years, high school football games in Idaho that were tied at the end of regulation remained tied unless they were postseason contests or vital to determining a postseason berth. This year, high school athletic officials adopted an overtime system similar to college football, with each team getting the ball on the 10-yard line and alternating equal possessions until one team outscores the other.

The Wildcats received the ball first, where Lewis again found the 6’3” Taylor on the first play. Lewis then ran in the two-point conversion to push the lead to eight.

Kellogg’s defense, which had flashed throughout the contest, had to get a stop.

The Wildcats shut them down on the first three plays and needed one play to get their first win over Timberlake since 2017. Kellogg senior defensive back Preston Graaskamp broke up the fourth-down pass, securing the win.

Kellogg (2-1) travels to Bonners Ferry this week.
