Wilbur Ronald Leonard, known as “Wil” to his friends, “Papa” to his grandkids, and “Papa with the Cat” to his great-grandkids, passed away Sept. 4, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born on May 15, 1940, in Black Lake, Idaho, to James Wilbur “Leggy” and Margaret Leonard, Wil was a lifelong resident of the Harrison/Black Lake area. He dedicated his career to logging, a profession he was deeply proud of, as well as his Pete truck.
Wil honorably served his country in the U.S. Army in the '60s. Wil was a proud Native American; he was a registered member of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, carrying his heritage with pride and passing that legacy down through the generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife, Bonnie Damiano; his son, Cary Leonard; and his grandson, Coley Ehlenfeldt. Their memories live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
Wil leaves behind a family who will forever treasure his wisdom, his stories, his strength, his love for the land and the gift of his great voice and unforgettable songs.
He is survived by his children: Suzette (Ron) Lange, Dana (Julia) Leonard, Kara Leonard and Charles Ehlenfeldt. His grandchildren: Kris (Kylie) Leonard, Meggee Leonard, Michael Ehlenfeldt, Jessica (David) Medeiros, Isabella Leonard, Emma Leonard, Lola Leonard, Josh Lange and Noah Lange. His great-grandchildren: Khloe, Cash, Karter, Mia and Dana Marie.
Wil also found a special community among his friends and caregivers at the U.S. Renal dialysis center in Hayden, Idaho, who brought love, laughter, companionship, and encouragement through the years. His family is deeply grateful for the bonds he shared there.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at The Country Barn B&B, 18500 S Old Lane Road, Cataldo, ID 83810
Family, friends, and all who knew Wil are warmly invited to join in honoring a life lived fully, fiercely and with love.
