POST FALLS — Senior Micah Young carded a team-best 8-over-par 80, Grace Loutzenhiser a team-best 100, and the Bulldogs placed fifth and sixth, respectively, at the Lakeland Invite held Thursday at The Links Golf Club.

Young's 80, one of his best scores of the season, placed him 10th out of 35 golfers and third among 5A Inland Empire League players. Senior Logan Roos and junior Bode Eacret fired in 83's and senior Tyler Weisz shot an 89 for Sandpoint's boys, which placed fifth out of seven scoring teams with total score of 335 — just 14 strokes behind Lakeland and five behind Lewiston. Junior Landon Day shot a 91 in the No. 5 position while senior Everett Gilman carded an 89 playing as an individual.

"Micah hit the ball well and played very steady; I'm very happy with his round," Sandpoint High head coach Mike Deprez said. "He had a decent day that will be a confidence builder for him."

Loutzenhiser's season-best 100 placed her tied for 18th out of 35 golfers and seventh among 5A Inland Empire League players. Hannah Majors carded a 102, Ella Mahlum a 104, and Evey Walker a 110 for Sandpoint's girls, which finished sixth out of seven scoring teams with a season-best total score of 416. Hailey Gove shot a 114 in the No. 5 spot while Aspen Little-Torrez carded a 115 playing as an individual.

"Grace hit the ball very well, she just struggled putting, which a lot of them did as they got used to speedy greens again — something we might find at state," Deprez noted.

Sandpoint returns to action Monday for the Coeur d'Alene Invitational, where the boys will play at the Avondale Golf Club in Hayden and the girls at the Hayden Lake Country Club in Hayden Lake. With the 5A Inland Empire League District Championship set for Friday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 4, at the University of Idaho Golf Course, the Bulldogs will rest their top three golfers at the Coeur d'Alene Invitational while the others vie for the remaining varsity spots.

HEADING INTO DISTRICTS

BOYS: "Similar to last year, everyone has similar scores ... there's always ups and downs, and teams are trading slots pretty freely — nobody is clearly ahead of the other team," Deprez said of his team, which is looking to defend their district title. "Logan, Micah, Bode, they're all hitting the ball well, we just need to get comfy on the greens and eliminate that inevitable big score."

GIRLS: "We need Hannah to find her footing again — she's very close — and see if we can get a couple of other girls to inch forward and play four of five strokes better, " Deprez said of his team, which has won the last four district titles. "State is not a forgone conclusion, even with the changing of the guard that we had. There's a realistic probability of finishing in that second-place spot."
