Former Boise State player Coby Karl joins Broncos men's basketball coaching staff
BOISE — Boise State men’s basketball has added Coby Karl as an assistant coach, head coach Leon Rice announced Thursday.
Karl, son of former Seattle SuperSonics coach George Karl, joins the Broncos with 10 years of coaching experience in the NBA and NBA G League. His role will heavily focus on player personnel and pro relations.
Prior to his return to Boise State, Karl served as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers for two years (2023-25) under head coach Nick Nurse.
Preceding his time in Philadelphia, Karl was a head coach for six seasons in the NBA G League with two franchises. He was at the helm of the Delaware Blue Coats for two years (2021-23) and South Bay Lakers for four (2016-20).
In his first season with the Blue Coats, Karl led the team to a 22-10 regular season record and a 14-1 mark in the Showcase Cup. The following year, Delaware went a combined 28-22 and won the 2022-23 NBA G League Championship, representing the first in team history.
Across four seasons in Los Angeles, Karl produced a 102-92 (.526) record and one Pacific Division championship.
Karl began his coaching career in 2015 as an assistant coach with the Westchester Knicks under head coach Mike Miller.
Karl played professionally from 2007-15 for the Lakers (2007-08), Cavaliers (2009-10) and Warriors (2010), while also spending time with the Idaho Stampede and Reno Bighorns of the G League. After his stints in the NBA, Karl played oversees in Spain, Italy and Germany until he jumped into coaching in 2015.
During his playing career at Boise State, Karl was a two-time All-Western Athletic Conference performer, earning second-team honors as junior and first-team recognition in his final campaign. In four seasons, Karl appeared in 127 games (111 starts), averaging 13.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists in his career.
At the conclusion of his collegiate playing career in 2007, Karl was the program’s third all-time leading scorer with 1,698 points. He currently ranks sixth in that category and is also top five in assists (408—3rd), 3-point field goals (266—3rd), free throws made (432—4th) and game started (111—T-5th).
