PREP ROUNDUP: Clemens throws for seven TDs in Coeur du Christ victory

• FOOTBALL

WORLEY — Sophomore Grant Clemens threw seven touchdown passes and returned an interception for a score for Coeur du Christ in a 54-32 win over the Lakeside Knights in the North Star League opener for both schools at the Marimn Health Coeur Center on Thursday. 

Junior Jon Denke opened the scoring for the Saints, returning the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. 

Clemens connected with senior wide receiver Greg Hayes on three touchdown passes in the second half for Coeur du Christ (4-1), which faces Deary in a nonleague game at Viking Field in Coeur d’Alene on Oct. 10. 

Lakeside (0-5) travels to Deary next Friday.

Lambert, Wilson win in 

tuneup for regionals

POST FALLS — Lake City junior Trey Lambert shot a 3-under-par 70 to earn boys medalist honors in the Lakeland Invitational at The Links Golf Club. 

Lake City claimed the boys team title with a 300, with Coeur d’Alene second with a 312. 

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Ella Wilson shot a 1-over-par 74 to earn medalist honors, leading the Viking girls to the team title. 

“The kids were outstanding today,” Coeur d’Alene girls golf coach Jeff Lake said. “The first nine holes, the conditions were perfect, but the wind picked up a bit on the back nine and our kids did a great job of adjusting to the conditions. Today was a great tuneup as we head into districts next week.” 

The 6A District 1 tournament is next Thursday at Avondale Golf Club in Hayden Lake. 

The 5A Region 1 tournament is next Friday at the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow.

LEWISTON — Junior defender Ayden Cragun scored in the 50th minute, but the Hawks were unable to push across the equalizer in a 5A Inland Empire League match against the Bengals at Walker Field. 

“We came off the bus a little slow and played a little lethargic with no energy in the first half,” said Lakeland coach Nick Haynes, whose team trailed 2-0 at halftime. “They scored in the first five minutes and again 20 minutes into the match. We came together at halftime and woke up a little bit and scored one, and came close to a few others, but couldn’t get that next one.” 

Lakeland (5-5-1, 2-3-1 5A IEL) hosts Lake City on Tuesday. 

Lewiston is 5-4, 5-1.

Senior Natalee Rose scored on an assist from senior Marisa Evans in the 17th minute for the Hawks, but the visiting Bengals scored the equalizer in the 79th minute in a 5A Inland Empire League draw at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“Natalee just had a breakaway and put it into the back of the net,” said Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge, whose team fell 9-3 at Lewiston on Sept. 4. “We’ve got the girls in the right spots right now. We’re connecting passes and the girls believe in themselves. You could tell we wanted to win and we held them off for 79 minutes. Lewiston’s a good team and we haven’t come that close to beating them in a while. It was a really good start to a competitive part of the season.” 

Lizzy Roy scored the tying goal for Lewiston (7-5, 4-2 5A IEL). 

Lakeland (5-3-3, 2-2-2) travels to Lake City on Tuesday.

PRIEST RIVER — The Lumberjacks (1-11) fell to 0-4 in Central Idaho League play with the 25-8, 25-14, 25-9 loss to the Spartans (11-1, 4-1 CIL). 

Dimercia Spooner had six kills and two blocks for St. Maries. Taryn Brebner had three assists, Sadie Jones three kills, Lyssa Watkins seven assists and a dig. 

“I think they had themselves a bit beat before going into tonight,” St. Maries coach Tammie Woster said. “The confidence and trust isn’t there yet. There is so much talent, but they just don’t believe it right now ... they’ll get there.” 

St. Maries plays host to Orofino on Tuesday in a rescheduled match.

CLARK FORK — Senior Megan Hull had 17 kills, 22 digs and two aces for the Miners in a 26-24, 22-25, 26-24, 25-16 Scenic Idaho Conference win over the Wampus Cats at Clark Fork High. 

Senior Kylee Phillips had eight kills, three blocks and 20 digs, senior Aubrey Birdsell 17 assists and 11 digs, junior Khepri Wood six kills and two blocks and senior Olivia Berry 13 digs for Wallace (9-2, 3-1 SIC), which travels to Kellogg on Tuesday.

PLUMMER — Senior Kimberly Pluff had 10 kills, five assists, six digs and four aces as the host Knights swept the Tigers 25-11, 25-13, 25-5 in nonleague play at Ron Miller Court. 

Tylah Lambert added 21 assists, nine aces, five kills and four digs for Lakeside (8-1). Rayna Schatz had five kills, four aces and three digs, Saydee Peone eight kills, six digs and two aces, Nona Ryanna Ortivez two kills, Allisue Hendrickx four digs, Cassidy Gorr five digs. 

“My girls had lots of fun tonight and it was good to see the smiles,” Lakeside coach Devyn Moore said. “My seniors, Kim, Tylah and Rayna, really connected and it showed; they played an amazing net game and even showed out in the back row. Big aggressive swings tonight from Saydee. Allisue and Cassidy had great coverage in the back.” 

Next up for Lakeside is a Scenic Idaho Conference match Tuesday at home vs. Genesis Prep.

POST FALLS — Junior Tyla Dittman had six kills and the visiting Warriors rebounded from a first-set loss to beat the Jaguars 13-25, 25-18, 31-29, 25-22 in nonleague play at The Courts at Real Life. 

Claire Cook had 10 service points for Kootenai (2-7), and Annika Hunter had four aces. 

“The girls had a rough start but in the end they showed that they had what it takes to win,” Kootenai coach Elexus Moore-Rich said.  

Genesis Prep is 0-8. 

The two teams are scheduled to meet again Monday in Harrison Flats.

COEUR d’ALENE — The visiting Saints trailed 8-1 in the deciding set before closing strong for a 25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 18-16 victory over the Viking junior varsity 2 team at Viking Court. 

Freshman Espi Klocko had 29 digs for Coeur du Christ (5-4). Maddie Junkin had 13 kills, Therese Junkin 10 blocks, Kate Clemens 24 assists, Angelica Ross four aces. 

“The game tonight was a really great opportunity to get the experience of playing a fifth set,” said Coeur du Christ coach Natalie Kiefer, whose squad played its first five-setter of the season. “It’s always invaluable to see how girls are going to react under that type of pressure. I’m very proud of the girls for finding a way to reset after some critical unforced errors earlier on in the set.” 

Coeur du Christ plays host to Clark Fork on Monday at Holy Family Catholic School.
