CHENEY — Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett felt that special teams could have been the difference in Friday’s nonleague game between the Trojans and the Glacier Peak Grizzlies of Snohomish, Wash., at Roos Field on the campus of Eastern Washington University.

How right the coach was.

Glacier Peak (4-0) blocked two extra points and got an 88-yard kickoff return by Michael Darling to start the second half as the Grizzlies beat the Trojans 30-18.

Post Falls junior defensive end Benedict Bresee gave the Trojans an early lead, scoring on a 20-yard fumble return.

“Benedict made a great play on the quarterback,” Bennett said. “It was a really big play and got us and our sideline going. We played a really good first half.”

Senior running back Brandon Felix scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 13-12 at halftime for Post Falls.

Glacier Peak outscored Post Falls 17-8 in the third quarter.

“We were chasing points after they took that kickoff back,” Bennett said. “I thought our kids did a good job and we played a lot better this week than we did last week. We were in it until the very end, and the kids played really hard.”

Post Falls (2-3) travels to Battle Ground, Wash., next Friday.

RATHDRUM — The Hawks took advantage of two bad snaps on punts to score on short fields, rolling past the Bears in a nonleague game at Corbit Field.

“Moscow is a really physical team, but made a lot of mistakes that cost them,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “I’m glad to get out of that with a win. We’ve got a lot to work on and still improve on.”

Lakeland led 28-0 at halftime.

“It was really a team effort,” Schroeder said. “I’m proud of the effort, but we’ve got to stay the course.”

“Our offensive line has struggled a little, but made some big steps last week,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “They’re starting to figure some stuff out and we started to create some space for Westin, and it doesn’t take much to get him going.”

St. Maries senior quarterback Jack Barta threw for two first-quarter touchdowns to give the Lumberjacks an early 13-0 lead. Timberlake’s Mason Shively scored on a 14-yard run to cut the deficit to 13-8.

Timberlake (1-5) outscored St. Maries (3-3) 10-0 in the third quarter to take a 30-19 lead.

“It took us a series or two to figure out what they were doing,” Amos said. “Credit to our kids saying that we’re fine and sticking with it. It was good to see our kids be resilient in that.”

Senior Isaiah Gustaffe caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Barta with 6:17 remaining.
