LEWISTON — Senior Huxley Hall and sophomore Gus Penrose both found nylon as the Bulldogs avenged a loss from earlier this season with a 5A Inland Empire League shutout win over the Bengals on Saturday at the P1FCU Sports Complex.

During the 32nd minute, Penrose and sophomore Dixon Reed broke the deadlock after a nice entry play that Penrose finished off for the 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Hall headed in a long throw-in by junior Knox Williams to extend the lead to two goals for Sandpoint, which had 11 shots on goal compared to Lewiston's one in the match.

Sandpoint struggled at first to breakthrough the Bengals' defensive-heavy setup, but eventually made the necessary adjustments, even tallying an 11-2 advantage on corner kicks in the winning effort.

"Once we started moving the ball quicker, making quicker decisions, and moving off the ball for each other, we started to break down their back line and create chances for ourselves," Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. "Overall, happy with the road win, league win, but not satisfied yet."

Junior goalkeeper Landon Brinkmeier made one save en route to his fifth shutout of the year for Sandpoint (9-3-1), which must defeat Lakeland on the road Thursday to secure the No. 1 seed for the district playoffs.

Lady Bulldogs use first-half scoring frenzy to down Lewiston

SANDPOINT — Senior Hope Barnes, sophomore Raelyn Olsen and junior Vivian Haag all scored in the first half as the Lady Bulldogs fended off the Lady Bengals for a 5A Inland Empire League win Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Field.

Barnes broke free during the fourth minute, and after a one-on-one with a Lewiston defender, buried the ball into the bottom center of the net from the right side for the early 1-0 lead.

During the 14th minute, Hagg found herself open for a close-range shot that made it's way into the bottom left-hand corner of the net. Olsen then pushed the advantage to 3-0 during the 27th minute when she found open room after a pass up the left side, eventually finding nylon on a shot that made it's way in between the left post and the opposing goalkeeper.

Lewiston scored in the 53rd and 55th minutes, but Sandpoint's defense held strong for the remaining 25 minutes to clinch the victory.

"Lewiston started pressing harder in the second half, but the girls were able to close it out," Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "It was a much-needed win. I am very proud of the way the girls are bouncing back. This is the time of the season where these wins can make a big difference."

Sandpoint (3-8-1) hosts Lakeland for a 5A Inland Empire League matchup and senior night Thursday.
