PREP SWIMMING: Sandpoint shines on senior recognition day
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 10 months, 2 weeks AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 29, 2025 6:00 PM
COEUR d'ALENE — Senior Kale Wright won the 50 and 100 free, sophomore Bodi Demmons broke the one-minute barrier and won the 100 back and the Sandpoint boys went undefeated in dual scoring on senior recognition day in a meet held Saturday at the Salvation Army Kroc Center.
Wright beat out 24 other swimmers to win the 50 free (23.28) and beat out 21 other swimmers to grab gold in the 100 free (51.11). Demmons' first-place finish out of 11 swimmers in the 100 back (59.59) was something Sandpoint High head coach Greg Jackson said exceeded expectations.
Wright was also a part of the winning 400 free relay (3:30.60), as were seniors Kai Leavitt, McCoy Jensen and sophomore Lou Foust. Jensen and Leavitt then combined with freshman Andrew Ford and sophomore Max Brown to win the 200 free relay (1:38.28).
Individually, Ford added a first-place finish in the 100 breast (1:05.41) while Leavitt placed second in the 100 fly (58.40), Foust second in the 50 free (24.72) and Ford second in the 100 IM (2:17.13). Jensen rounded out the day by finishing second in both the 100 breast (1:08.74) and 200 free (1:58.20) for Sandpoint, which defeated Lake City, Lewiston, Post Falls, Wallace and Lakeland in dual scoring.
For the girls, senior Reina Montecchi finished first in the 100 free (57.99) and tied for second in the 50 free (26.40) to lead the Lady Bulldogs, which defeated Post Falls, Lakeland, Wallace and Lewiston in dual scoring.
Montecchi also anchored Sandpoint's second-place 200 medley relay (2:07.29), which Claire Ballard, Alivia Storms and Athena de Leeuw — all freshmen — were also a part of.
Also in the relays, Montecchi and seniors Bria Rocke, Rachel Aylward and Mia Driggs combined to take second in the 400 free relay (4:14.08) while Aylward, Ballard, Driggs and Storms combined to take second in the 200 free relay (1:50.70).
Storms placed second in the 100 breast (1:16.86) for Sandpoint, which travels to the Asotin Aquatics Center in Clarkston, Wash. for a meet this Saturday.
