Full caption: Rory Johnston, middle, an 11-year-old from Newport and member of the Independence Ski Racing Team based at Schweitzer, won the overall U12 title at the 2026 Pacific Northwest (PNW) Buddy Werner Championships held March 27 through 29 in Mt. Bachelor, Ore. Competing against top young racers from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, Johnston earned first-place in Slalom with a total time of 1 minute, 21.73 seconds across two runs, third in Giant Slalom with a total time of 1 minute, 25.33 seconds across two runs, and was seventh in Skills Quest — a strong all-around performance that secured him the championship crown. Johnston trains and races with the Independence Ski Racing Team, a grassroots non-profit program that provides affordable, team-oriented racing opportunities for local kids. The team emphasizes accessibility, with many athletes from blue-collar families, and relies on dedicated volunteer coaches, members of the organization said in a press release. “We’re incredibly proud of Rory’s hard work and dedication this season,” Doug and Shannon, parents and coaches of Rory, said. “The volunteer coaching staff at Independence has created a supportive environment where kids can develop skills, build confidence, and have fun in the sport.” The Buddy Werner program honors the legacy of pioneering American skier Wallace “Buddy” Werner and focuses on fun, skill-building racing for young athletes in the Youth Ski League (YSL).
