Michael Orvis, 73

Michael Earl Orvis, 73, passed away surrounded by the legacy of a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and a deep love for the outdoors. He was born on Feb. 3, 1953, in Conrad to Earl "Bud" Orvis and Marilyn Jean Duncan.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Julie and Shelley; and his younger brother, Brian. 

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mavis; his sons, Skip (Melissa) and Travis (Erin); his grandchildren, Cody (Lindsay) and Kaycee; his sisters, Angie (Tom) and Amy, and brother, Russel (Sara).

From a young age, Mike embraced adventure and discipline, working as a smokejumper in his youth before discovering his true calling in heavy equipment operation. He later served with the Montana Highway Department as a snowplow driver, where he earned a reputation for precision and care. Mike was known for never starting a machine without first completing every pre-operational check — every "t" crossed and every "i" dotted. That attention to detail reflected the pride he took in everything he did.

Mike found his greatest joy outdoors. Whether hunting, cross-country skiing, or working on projects at sunrise, he lived close to the land. His favorite pastime was fishing for walleye alongside his beloved wife, Mavis, on Fort Peck Lake. Together, they spent countless hours on the water and even achieved a top 10 finish in the Montana Governor’s Cup fishing tournament — one of many cherished accomplishments they shared.

For several seasons, Mike and Mavis managed the Tiber Marina, where Mike left a lasting mark. Drawing on his love of trees and the mountains, he planted dozens of trees around the campground — creating windbreaks and shade that will serve visitors for generations to come.

Mike was an early riser through and through. No matter how late the night before — often spent around a campfire with family and friends — he greeted each morning at 5 a.m., ready to get to work. To Mike, sleeping in was never an option when there was something to be built, fixed, or improved.

As the eldest sibling, Mike naturally stepped into the role of "big brother," leading the way — sometimes to the chagrin of those who followed, but always out of care and responsibility. His bond with his younger brother Brian was especially strong. From childhood adventures to life’s later years, they were inseparable. If you picked on one, you got both — a testament to their unwavering loyalty to each other.

Mike will be remembered for his steady hands, his strong work ethic, and his deep devotion to family. His legacy lives on in the land he tended, the trees he planted, and the people he loved.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on April 6 at the Lakeview Cemetery in Valier, Montana.
