Polson Seniors: The meteorological method of determining weather

I am now using the official meteorological method to determine the start of each season, rather than the astronomical method and all those confusing words about equinoxes and solstices. The method uses average Earth temperatures, and seasons start on the first day of December, March, June and September. How easy is that?

Next, I will start ignoring this totally ridiculous “Savings Time” fraud. If you want the Sun to rise earlier, move to coastal Maine. If you want it to set later, move to Alaska. “Standard time” or Death! Viva the revolution!

Get help with your taxes from the AARP Tax Assistance Program on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., from now through April 15. You must register for an appointment and fill out an information packet. No charge, but donations to the senior center are welcome.

We have an opening for a part-time cook’s helper. Job applications are available at the center from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A toenail clinic will be available at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center; call them for details.

Activities at the center, open to all, include: Wednesday Play Day to play cards, board games, dominoes, chess or mahjong (invite a foursome); self-guided, video-assisted exercise, 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; bingo at 6 p.m. and on the first and third Wednesdays of each month playing card bingo at 6 p.m. (elimination-style); and pinochle, 12:30 p.m. on Mondays (no pass) and Thursdays (standard).

The pool table is open for play 8 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays. Bridge and Mahjong groups meet regularly at the center. We also have a variety of five-handed, no-partner pass-one-card games. Cribbage will be organized weekly on Wednesdays. A name and phone number are required. All skill levels are welcome.

The Bowling Fun League is on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at the Sportspage Bowl. The Spinning Wheelers meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; call 208-520-1013.

A veteran’s service officer visits the center from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on the first Friday and third Tuesday of each month. Kiwanis will meet at 12 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the center.

We have space for small groups to meet for social, health or educational purposes. Wednesdays are best; other weekdays are as well. Our community center is open for special events on weekends and evenings. Call for details.

Sit-down meals are available from 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. weekdays and are delivered to qualified people who call before 10 a.m. A suggested donation of $5 helps support the nutrition program.

Upcoming main dishes include: pork chops with mashed potatoes, April 2; fish sandwiches, April 3; chicken-noodle soup, April 6; goulash, April 7; corned beef casserole, April 8; chicken Alfredo, April 9; and sloppy joes, April 10.

The Polson Senior Community Center is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at 504 Third Ave. East. It has space available for your special event (large or small), daily, on weekends, or in the evenings. For more information, call 406-883-4735, email [email protected] or visit us on Facebook.
