Real conservatives value independent thinking

Calling moderate Republicans “RINOs” because they do not align with the Idaho Freedom Foundation’s scorecard does not reflect conservatism. Idaho has long valued independent thinking, local control, and a willingness to work together across differences. That tradition deserves to continue.
Organizations like the Idaho Freedom Foundation, Stop Idaho RINOs, and CPAC are part of larger national networks that bring ideas and influence into states like ours. They are not rooted in the everyday lives of North Idaho communities. The values that shape our schools, libraries, and towns should come from the people who live here, not from scorecards.
As we approach the May 19 primary, some candidates are defining “true conservatism” through external endorsements. But conservatism at its best trusts local communities to make local decisions. When the state steps in to dictate what belongs in libraries, what flags can be flown, or how schools operate, it moves away from that principle.
People are drawn to North Idaho because of its strong sense of freedom and self determination. That freedom grows when communities are trusted to lead and when neighbors work together to find solutions that reflect shared values.
This is an opportunity to return to a broader, more grounded conservatism. One that values responsibility, respects local voices, and focuses on practical outcomes that strengthen families and communities. Idaho works best when it stays true to those principles.
