Thomas (Tom) Carrol Hukle passed peacefully in his sleep March 3, 2026. Tom was born to Carrol Bertram (Bert) Hukle and Ella Deveraux Hukle (Mahoney) Feb. 1, 1938, in Huntington, West Virginia. Tom loved riding his horse and losing himself in the movies at his family’s two theaters.

Tom left Huntington to study Aeronautical Engineering at Parks College in St. Louis. His vision made his dream of becoming an Airforce Pilot unattainable. So he did the next best thing – build the planes.

After graduation, Tom moved to Wichita, Kansas to work for Boeing which eventually sent him to Seattle, Washington.

In 1968, Tom met the love of his life, Karen Johnson. Marrying on Oct. 24, 1969, they soon welcomed two children, Michael (Mike) and Tracey.

Tom and Karen took a big risk opening Yacht Riggers in 1973. They made a name for their business and as formidable competitors in sailing. They were a staple in the Seattle community until selling their company in 1997.

Tom and Karen raised their kids on the water and at the mountain. Summers were spent sailing throughout the Northwest and B.C. and adventures like the Seattle to Portland bike ride. Winters were spent traveling to ski races.

In 1999, Tom and Karen built their dream home in Sandpoint, Idaho. Their retirement was filled with new friends. They skied Schweitzer Mountain and won sailboat regattas. The annual “Tom Hukle Excellence in Sailing Award” was named in his honor.

In 2014, Tom suffered a massive stroke. Karen was his constant caregiver until the end.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Mike (Sara); daughter, Tracey Mason (Dan); grandchildren, Ella, Kyra, and Michael; and numerous family and friends.

Tom was a mentor, friend and a confidant. Sail with the Angels, Skipper, you deserve it.
