SANDPOINT — Have you ever wondered what Thomas Jefferson would look like as a potato and wanted to sign a piece of history?
If that oddly specific dream is one you hold, you’re in luck. State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth is bringing the Revolutionary Spuds to collect signatures on a replica Declaration of Independence in Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry next Wednesday, April 8. The event is a part of the state’s celebration of the United States of America’s 250th anniversary.
The event kicks off in Bonners Ferry at the Boundary County Museum, 7229 Main St., from 10 to 11 a.m. Later, the spuds make their way to Sandpoint and the East Bonner County Library, 1407 Cedar St., from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Created by Ellsworth, the Revolutionary Spuds are based off the Idaho Potato Commission’s mascot, Spuddy Buddy, but each given their own personality based off a historical figure. Visitors will be able to see “Thomas Jefferspud,” “Alexander Hamiltater,” “Spuddy John Jay” and “Molly-Tot Pitcher” at the two events.
The replica of the Declaration of Independence has been traveling across the state collecting signatures as a part of Idaho’s America 250 celebration. Once it has made its rounds, the document will hang in the Idaho State Capitol rotunda.
