Built in the Flathead: Columbia Falls manufacturer combines advanced technology, skilled workers to reach customers worldwide

Precision manufacturing and advanced technology are at the heart of what makes Defiance Machine a standout manufacturer in the Flathead Valley.
Located in Columbia Falls, Defiance Machine produces high-end bolt-action rifle receivers used by professional shooters, hunters, and law enforcement agencies across the United States and in countries around the world. With a team of about 35 employees, the company has built a reputation in the precision shooting industry for producing actions known for exceptional reliability, consistency and accuracy.
The company was founded in 2009 by competitive Benchrest shooter and innovator Glen Harrison. His goal was simple: design and manufacture a rifle action capable of delivering the highest level of precision possible. While the company has grown significantly since then, that original commitment to quality and performance remains at the center of its mission.
Today, Defiance Machine operates under new ownership after being acquired in late 2022 by Bob Beck. Beck leads The Extreme Group, which also includes McMillan Stocks based in Phoenix. The partnership allows Defiance Machine to continue expanding while maintaining the precision engineering standards that helped establish the company’s reputation.
A key part of that success comes from the technology used inside the company’s Columbia Falls manufacturing facility. Defiance Machine utilizes advanced CNC equipment, including high-precision machining centers from manufacturers such as Nakamura-Tome and Kitamura. These machines allow the company to produce extremely complex components with tight tolerances and remarkable repeatability.
“Precision is everything in what we do,” said Chad Triolo, General Manager. “The technology we invest in allows us to hold incredibly tight tolerances while maintaining efficiency and consistency across every action we manufacture.”
The company is also proud to provide high-quality manufacturing jobs in the Flathead Valley. Employees at Defiance Machine earn above market wages and receive benefits including health, dental and vision coverage along with a 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching.
“We’re committed to building careers here, not just jobs,” said Sandy Hawkes, Business Manager. “Taking care of our employees and creating a supportive workplace culture is one of the most important investments we can make as a company.”
Beyond manufacturing, Defiance Machine is actively involved in building the next generation of skilled workers. The company partners with programs at Flathead Valley Community College and other regional machining programs to help train and recruit future machinists. Students, instructors, and community members regularly tour the Defiance facility to see advanced manufacturing technology in action and learn about career opportunities in precision machining.
“Manufacturing today is incredibly high-tech,” said Will Hopkins, R&D Manager. “When students visit our shop and see the level of technology involved, it often changes their perception of what modern firearms manufacturing looks like.”
Defiance Machine also supports competitive shooting sports and events throughout the region, reflecting the passion for precision marksmanship that helped inspire the company’s founding. The company works with shooters, rifle builders and industry partners across the country while maintaining strong roots in the Flathead Valley community.
“Our products may end up in rifles used around the world,” said Chad Triolo, General Manager, “but we’re proud that they’re designed and manufactured right here in Northwest Montana.
