Flathead Electric Cooperative is excited to celebrate Mike West with the Flathead National Forest for winning the nation’s highest honor in the field of wildfire preparedness.
West, Fire Prevention and Mitigation Specialist for the U.S. Forest Service in Kalispell, was recently named a recipient of the 2026 Wildfire Mitigation Award. This award recognizes West’s extraordinary leadership in protecting Montana communities through innovative federal-local partnerships.
West is a cornerstone of Firesafe Flathead, a multiagency collaborative council that has facilitated thousands of acres of cross-boundary hazardous fuels mitigation. His ability to bridge the gap between agencies and the public has resulted in millions of dollars in grants and dozens of community outreach initiatives.
Flathead Electric is committed to proactive wildfire mitigation, recognizing that strategic action is essential to protecting lives, property, and the long-term reliability of the region’s electric infrastructure.
West’s leadership has been instrumental in launching critical initiatives across the Flathead Valley recently, including collaborations with Flathead Electric Cooperative.
West helped secure a $10 million Federal Community Wildfire Defense Grant for the five-year Glacier Gateway Project. Led by Flathead Electric and Montana West Economic Development, the initiative aims to treat 3,500 acres of land to protect 80,000 residents in communities near Glacier National Park.
West also spearheaded the Blacktail Powerline Project between the Forest Service, Flathead Electric and Blacktail Mountain Ski Area. This project will reduce wildfire risk in the Lakeside community while making the local electrical grid more reliable.
“Mike’s dedication is the reason these projects move from a map on a wall to real work on the ground," said Amanda Opp at Flathead Electric Cooperative. "Wildfire mitigation is a long, complex process that requires a partner who stays engaged with you. Mike’s commitment to sticking through the technical hurdles and bringing every stakeholder to the table has been vital. He’s not just a collaborator; he’s a catalyst for a safer, more resilient electrical grid for our members."
West was selected by a national committee representing the National Association of State Foresters, the National Fire Protection Association, the USDA Forest Service, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
The selection committee highlighted West’s "unique convener role," noting his initiative in turning complex conversations into tangible action.
“Mike has gone above and beyond his typical job responsibilities as a Prevention Specialist on the Flathead National Forest by leading community collaborations for wildfire mitigation,” the selection committee said of West in its announcement. “He has helped secure significant funding for hazardous fuels reduction work and communicates well with residents and visitors alike to explain the importance of fuels reduction.”
The Wildfire Mitigation Awards program was created to bring national attention to the value of wildfire mitigation and to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the field.
