Hawk golfers battle cold weather with good attitude

The best defense against cold weather? Attitude, ask any coach.
Facing a bit of winter weather in Hamilton Tuesday at the Florence/Darby Invitational, Thompson Falls coach Doree Thilmony said her Blue Hawk golfers had that right stuff, that positive mental approach. Even when it started snowing.
“I thought they battled the cold start with great attitudes,” she said.
Leading the way, senior Solveig Nygaard had the best day, winning third individually with a solid round of 89. Thilmony said Nygaard had no fear of the weather on her way to that fine showing.
“Solveig is very mentally tough and she has shown tremendous growth in the game,” Thilmony said. “She truly enjoys the game and not a lot rattles her.”
Thilmony also complimented the efforts of her two-sport athletes, the sister-brother pair of junior Aubrey and freshman Nathan Baxter, who are also both competing in track and field, Blake Shusterman, Tristan Kelly and Billy Detlaff for their fine play in Hamilton.
“Aubrey has been putting in extra time for both sports, I look for her getting even more competitive as the season goes on, and Nathan is gaining more experience each week as well,” she said. “Blake had a great short game Tuesday. Tristan was strong off the tee but struggled a little around the green,” adding that he was working on that issue in practice.
Thilmony said Detlaff played his first 18-hole round ever at the varsity level, and that she was impressed with his consistency and composure on the course in Hamilton.
The Hawks continue their 2026 golf journey at the Plains Invitational at Wild Horse Golf Course west of Plains Friday, Thilmony said, adding that she will be putting her younger players in action these next few weeks, including at Wild Horse.
“Our JV crew has also been working hard at grooving their swing and we hope to get them a couple of 9 hole rounds to get their feet wet,” she said.
