PREP ROUNDUP: Helmholz socks first career homer as Lakeland sweeps

• SOFTBALL

SPIRIT LAKE — Junior Abigail Helmholz struck out 10 and hit a two-run home run — her first career homer — in the fourth inning of the first game, and the visiting Lakeland Hawks went on to sweep the Timberlake Tigers 9-2 and 20-4 in a nonleague doubleheader Tuesday. 

Helmholz allowed five hits and walked one in seven innings in the opener for Lakeland (8-3). 

"It was her first one (homer) ever," Lakeland coach Dwayne Curry said. "She pitched a great game too." 

Delilah Zimmerman hit a solo homer in the seventh and drove in a pair of runs for the Hawks. Katie Nave tripled and knocked in two runs. 

In the second game, Jaiden Corbey drove in three runs, two on a third-inning double, for Lakeland.  

Raygen Dutton went 4 for 6 on the day for the Hawks, with two RBIs and four runs scored. Zimmerman was 4 for 6 with three RBIs and five runs scored. 

Shae Jones struck out 13 in the first game for Timberlake (2-4), and Prestyn Gardner hit a three-run homer in the second game for the Tigers. 

On Thursday, Lakeland travels to Sandpoint for a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader, and Timberlake visits Reardan (Wash.) for a nonleague pair.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Brooklyn Caan drove in five runs in the opener and senior KaeLee Kolden homered in both games as the host Timberwolves swept the Bulldogs. 

Caan hit two-run doubles in the third and fourth innings of the opener for Lake City (8-1), part of a 3-for-4 day. 

Kolden hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the first game and a three-run shot in the fifth inning of the second game.  

Alexandria Bracy went 4 for 4 in the second game for the Timberwolves. Madeline Peterson struck out nine in the opener for Lake City, and Tabitha Lopez fanned 10 in the nightcap.

“It was good to get a pair of wins today,” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “KaeLee had some big, timely home runs in both games. Brook was an RBI machine in Game 1 and did a great job of scoring her teammates. Lou had solid at-bats at the plate in Game 2. Overall, I think we have a lot of great things to build off of. We are excited and ready to start our 6A games this week.”

Taylor Bannick hit a three-run home run in the third inning of the first game to give Sandpoint (3-7) a 4-2 lead. 

Lake City plays at Post Falls on Saturday in a 6A Inland Empire League doubleheader.

girls win at Lakeland meet

RATHDRUM — Post Falls sophomore Griffin Carpenter won in the 110-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles to help the Trojan boys edge Lakeland in a four-team meet at Lakeland High. 

Post Falls' boys finished with 140 points, followed by Lakeland with 136. 

Lakeland junior Sapphire Ruelle won the 100 and 200 and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay as the Hawks claimed the girls team title with 162 points.

St. Maries boys, girls 

finish third at Kamiah 

KAMIAH — St. Maries seniors Santiago Prenzato won the 100 (11.26 seconds) and 200 (23.01) and Isaiah Gustaffe was first in the 110 hurdles (15.17) and 300 hurdles (41.27) for the Lumberjacks in the Kamiah Invitational at the Bob Squires Sports Complex. 

St. Maries senior Zack Sotin won the discus (133 feet, 2 ¼ inches) and senior Jordan Yearout the long jump (21-1) for the Lumberjacks, who finished third with 80 points.  

St. Maries sophomore Dimerica Spooner won the javelin (99-1), junior Sophia Tondee the high jump (4-10) for the Lumberjack girls, who finished tied with Kootenai for third with 70 points. 

Kootenai junior Tyla Dittman won the girls pole vault (9-0). 

Logos swept the boys (130 points) and girls (197 points) team titles.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Vikings swept in boys singles, girls doubles and mixed doubles to top the Trojans at Coeur d’Alene High. 

“I’m very proud of how our kids competed today, especially coming off spring break,” Coeur d’Alene coach Corey DeLeonard said. “After a challenging practice yesterday, it was great to see the team respond so well and secure a victory. Post Falls is a good team with experienced upperclassmen who how know to battle for every point. I feel like this win reflects our team’s resillience and determination.” 

Coeur d’Alene hosts Sandpoint on Thursday. 

Post Falls hosts Lakeland on Thursday.
