PREP BASEBALL: Vikings' Fenter drives in eight in opener
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 hours, 36 minutes AGO
POST FALLS — It’s safe to say that Coeur d’Alene senior Bam Fenter is comfortable in his spot in the at the top of the Viking batting order.
At least he was on Tuesday.
Fenter, who has signed with NAIA Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, went 4 for 4 with two home runs — including a grand slam in the third inning — for Coeur d’Alene in a 24-9 win over Post Falls in the first game of a 6A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Post Falls High.
“He’s just getting locked in little by little,” Coeur d’Alene coach Brandon Williams said. “He’s still getting used to that leadoff spot and figuring out what he’s supposed to do. Once he dials it in, as he goes, we go.”
Junior Jackson Hackett walked three times and hit a solo home run in the third for Coeur d’Alene, which drew 14 walks in the opener.
“Our guys just did a good job taking our walks,” Williams said. “When we got our pitch, we jumped on it.”
“We didn’t show up ready to play in that first game,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “We came out really flat and had eight walks and three dropped flies. All season, we’ve had games where we’d show up and it’s hard to tell which team is going to show up. We looked disinterested.”
In the nightcap, the teams were tied 12-12 after six innings before the game was stopped due to darkness. The game will be completed if the result could affect postseason seeding.
Post Falls (2-7) travels to Coeur d’Alene (3-2) for a doubleheader on Thursday.
