Polson Seniors: Tax Day is approaching quickly
Pete Mangels | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 3 days, 1 hour AGO
Get help with your taxes from the AARP Tax Assistance Program on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from now through April 15. You must register for an appointment and fill out an information packet. No charge, but donations to the senior center are welcome.
The AARP Safe Drivers course will be held on Tuesday, April 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the center. The course costs $25, and AARP members receive a $5 discount. The course includes no testing, an easy-to-follow video, a take-home manual and an expert group leader to sharpen your driving knowledge.
Completion of the course makes you eligible for a discount on your car insurance. Personally, I’ve saved $90 over three years on my policy. You must sign up at the center before the day of the course; no walk-ins are allowed.
Jim and Marion Woidke have left Polson to be closer to their grandchildren in the Bozeman area. They volunteered as drivers for the nutrition program for several years and participated in our pinochle club. They cheerfully and generously gave their time, talents and treasures to help the nutrition program thrive. We wish our friends well on their new adventures. We are seeking drivers to replace them.
We have an open part-time cook’s helper position. Job applications are available at the center from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
A toenail clinic will be available at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center; call them for details.
Activities at the center, open to all, include: Wednesday Play Day to play cards, board games, dominoes, chess or mahjong (invite a foursome); self-guided, video-assisted exercise, 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; bingo at 6 p.m. and on the first and third Wednesdays of each month playing card bingo at 6 p.m. (elimination-style); and pinochle, 12:30 p.m. on Mondays (no pass) and Thursdays (standard).
The pool table is open for play 8 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays. Bridge and Mahjong groups meet regularly at the center. We also have a variety of five-handed, no-partner pass-one-card games. Cribbage will be organized weekly on Wednesdays. A name and phone number are required. All skill levels are welcome.
The Bowling Fun League is on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at the Sportspage Bowl. The Spinning Wheelers meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; call 208-520-1013.
A veteran’s service officer visits the center from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on the first Friday and third Tuesday of each month. Kiwanis will meet at 12 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the center.
We have space for small groups to meet for social, health or educational purposes. Wednesdays are best; other weekdays are as well. Our community center is open for special events on weekends and evenings. Call for details.
Sit-down meals are available from 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. weekdays and are delivered to qualified people who call before 10 a.m. A suggested donation of $5 helps support the nutrition program.
Upcoming main dishes include: chicken Alfredo, April 9; sloppy Joes, April 10; clam chowder, April 13; pork tips with noodles, April 14; chicken enchiladas, April 15; meatloaf, April 16; and oven-baked omelet, April 17.
The Polson Senior Community Center is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at 504 Third Ave. East. It has space available for your special event (large or small), daily, on weekends, or in the evenings. For more information, call 406-883-4735, email [email protected] or visit us on Facebook.
