The city of Coeur d'Alene said Friday that John Fugitt has accepted the position of fire chief and is expected to begin his tenure in May.

Fugitt is serving as deputy chief administrator/fire marshal for the Fullerton Fire Department in Fullerton, Calif., with 25 years of experience.

Fire Chief Tom Greif is set to retire April 16 after nearly 29 years of service to Coeur d'Alene.

"Throughout his career, Chief Greif has exemplified exceptional leadership, commitment, and professionalism, leaving a lasting and meaningful impact on the fire department and the community he has faithfully served," said Mayor Dan Gookin. "We extend our sincere gratitude and congratulations to Chief Greif as he enters retirement.”

Deputy Fire Chief Bill Deruyter will serve as interim fire chief until Fugitt arrives.

“The city appreciates the dedication of its fire department leadership and remains committed to maintaining the high level of service our residents expect and deserve," Gookin said.
