PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland rallies in nightcap to sweep Sandpoint

SOFTBALL


SANDPOINT — Senior Delilah Zimmerman’s solo homer in the top of the seventh inning of the second game tied it at 6, and the Lakeland Hawks scored three runs in the eighth to beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 9-6 to complete a sweep of their 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader Thursday at War Memorial Field. 

Lakeland won the first game 15-3 in five innings.  

In the second game, Kiersten Drake homered in the top of the fifth to tie it at 4 for Lakeland (10-3, 4-0 5A IEL).  

In the eighth, with the automatic runner at second, Katie Nave was hit by a pitch and Abigail Helmholz reached on a bunt single, loading the base. An error scored two runs and a wild pitch scored the third. 

In the first game, junior Raygen Dutton hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning for Lakeland, and a run-scoring double in the fifth. 

Jaiden Corbey hit a solo home run in the third and a two-run double in the fifth for the Hawks, who have won eight straight. Helmholz struck out eight in the opener.

“Two good hard-fought wins today,” Lakeland coach Dwayne Curry said. “Sandpoint has really built a good program. My girls are really playing for each other now; these were true team wins.” 

Sandpoint is 3-9, 1-5. 

Lakeland travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

POST FALLS — Junior Molly Nelson went 5 for 6 in the first game, and finished 7 for 9 with six RBIs and six runs scored, and the visiting Vikings swept the Trojans in 6A Inland Empire League play. 

Jenna Davenport hit two home runs and drove in six runs in the second game for Coeur d’Alene (9-0, 2-0 6A IEL), and finished 7 for 9 with nine RBIs and four runs scored. She hit a three-run homer in the second inning and a two-run shot in the fourth. 

Savannah Stevens went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the opener for Coeur d’Alene, and pitched a five-inning two-hit shutout in the nightcap. 

Kyndal Bridge went 5 for 9 on the day, with three RBIs and five runs scored for the Vikings. In the opener, Ollie Dudley hit a two-run double in a 10-run seventh that broke the game open. 

In the first game, Makenna Zimmerman of Post Falls (4-4, 0-2) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 7. 

Post Falls plays host to Lake City on Saturday in a 6A IEL doubleheader. 

Coeur d’Alene is home vs. Lakeland on Tuesday.

REARDAN, Wash. — Sophomore Shae Jones hit two home runs and drove in seven runs in the first game, and the visiting Tigers went on to sweep the Screaming Eagles in nonleague play. 

Jones hit a two-run homer in the second inning and a grand slam in the fifth for Timberlake (4-4). She also struck out 12 in each game, and allowed three hits in 10.2 innings.  

Freshman Nova Gonzales drove in three runs in the second game, two on a second-inning single. 

Reardan dropped to 4-8. 

Timberlake plays host to Frenchtown (Mont.) on Saturday.

at Circling Raven


WORLEY — Bonners Ferry’s Patrick Young and Logos’ Henry Driskill shot a 2-over-par 74 to earn boys medalist honors at the Circling Raven Invitational at Circling Raven Golf Club. 

Kendyl Bircher shot a 99 to pace the Kellogg girls to the team title with a 407. 

Logos of Moscow won the boys team title with a 350.

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Vikings swept in girls doubles and mixed doubles to beat the Bulldogs at Coeur d’Alene High. 

“Sandpoint is a very well-coached team and they are always a tough opponent,” Coeur d’Alene coach Corey DeLeonard said. “It was great to see our doubles teams step up and pull off some big wins, especially after the singles matches were split early on.” 

Coeur d’Alene travels to Lewiston and Moscow on Tuesday.
