SPIRIT LAKE — The Challenge wasn’t so much about the weather this time, but more about getting back into shape after a week off for spring break.

Coeur d’Alene senior pole vaulter George Mitchell is still working his way back from a slight injury.

On Friday, it worked out well enough for Mitchell, who won the boys pole vault with a height of 11 feet at the 11th annual Kootenai County Challenge at Timberlake High.

“I usually think about where I need to be before I go in the air and what technique I need to use,” Mitchell said. “I don’t really think about anything when I’m going over the bar, and you don’t get a lot of time to look around when you’re in the air.”

Mitchell scratched on all three attempts at 12 feet.

Temperatures were in the mid-70s for most of the day, compared to previous years where wind and cold weather has been a factor.

“It’s a lot easier than on a cold day,” Mitchell said. “When it’s warm, it makes the poles a lot more flexible. Also, there’s not that much side wind, so it’s a good day for pole vaulting.”

Mitchell admitted it wasn’t quite what he was hoping for.

“Today wasn’t my best day, and 12-6 (12 feet, 6 inches) is my PR,” Mitchell said. “Hopefully I’ll get it up to 14 feet in the next few weeks.”

Mitchell, in his fourth year pole vaulting in high school, is hoping to qualify for state for the first time.

“My freshman year, I wasn’t so good at it,” Mitchell said. “But I stuck with it. The higher you get, the more of a feeling you get mid-air. Of all the events that I do, it’s probably the most fun.”

Coeur d’Alene senior Mitchell Rietze won the 1,600-meter run and high jump, and senior Camden Johnson won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles for the Vikings, who won the meet with 170 points. It was the second straight Challenge title for the Coeur d’Alene boys.

“Our boys had a great meet,” Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos said. “I think we scored points in every event.”

Lakeland junior Sapphire Ruelle (100, 200) and junior Jackie Robbins (shot put, discus) helped the Hawks finish with 148 points to win the girls meet. Coeur d’Alene was second with 146.

“Just like last time, our girls lost a close one to Lakeland that came down to the last race,” Amos said. “The Lakeland girls are a very strong group, so we are very proud of our girls’ performance.”

It was the first title for a Lakeland team in the history of the meet, which began in 2016.

Lake City junior Chase Young won the 100 and ran a winning leg of the school’s 4x100 relay along with fellow juniors Dylan Mason, Britton Johnston and Caden Tony, in 42.99 seconds.

“Chase really worked his tail off over the summer and put in a ton of time in the weight room,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “He’s running great right now. Coach (Bryant) Sampson does a great job for us in the boys sprints.”
