POST FALLS — Leave it a senior to step up on his day.

Post Falls senior Michael O’Connor had 11 strikeouts in the opener, then delivered three hits and two RBIs in the nightcap as the Trojans swept the Lake City Timberwolves 3-1 and 10-6 in a 6A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Post Falls High on Saturday.

“It was nice to see him go deep in a game on the mound,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said of O’Connor. “We’ve been wanting to get his endurance built up, but really nice to see him have that success today. And he had a couple of big hits in the second game.”

Junior Marshall Tomlinson had three hits and four RBIs in the second game for Post Falls (5-8, 3-2 6A IEL), which is scheduled to host Colville on Monday.

“We’ve really needed Marshall to step up, but it’s been slow getting him going,” Reese said. “We’ve moved him around in the lineup and it was good to see him have a breakout day. We’ll need him to produce to make a run at state.”

Colton Slife had an RBI for Lake City in the opener.

“We just weren’t hitting the ball in the first game,” Lake City coach Gil Pierce said. “We’ve got to be more aggressive at the plate, especially when you’ve got a guy throwing strikes. We had good pitching in the first game, but didn’t have good hitting.”

Sean Macniven and Kasen Noffke had three RBIs each for Lake City (4-10, 0-2) in the second game.

“I think we’re right there, but need to put it all together,” Pierce said. “We gave up some runs, but had hitting in the second game. We need five or six guys to hit well at once. We’re right there but need to keep battling.”

Post Falls and Lake City play another doubleheader at Lake City High on Tuesday.
