COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Lancaster smashes first collegiate home run

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 hour, 43 minutes AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 15, 2026 1:00 AM

Bailey Lancaster, Principia College Softball

A 2025 graduate of Sandpoint High, Bailey, a freshman catcher and infielder, went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run to deep left field — the first home run of her college career — during an 11-3 loss in the opener of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Eureka College on April 11. The former Lady Bulldog standout, batting .268 on the year to go along with a .362 on-base percentage, also went 2-for-2 with two singles during a 9-1 loss to the Mississippi University of Women on April 4 and went 1-for-2 with a single during a 14-1 loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on April 13. Principia hosts Westminster College (Missouri) on April 16 and Lyon College (Arkansas) on April 18 for a pair of conference doubleheaders.

Jack Zimmerman, Lassen College Baseball

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Jack, a redshirt sophomore and left-handed outfielder, went 3-for-5 with his first career home run, a double, three RBIs, four runs scored, a walk and a stolen base as the Cougars downed Butte College by a score of 14-4 on April 13. The former Bulldog standout's homer was a solo shot that came during the game's second at-bat on an 0-1 count. Zimmerman, batting .378 on the year to go along with .489 on-base percentage, and Lassen College (22-13) returned to action yesterday for another game against Butte and will play a home-and-away series with Feather River on April 17 and 18.

Drew Lehman, Columbia Basin College Baseball

A 2025 graduate of Sandpoint High, Drew, a freshman infielder and outfielder, went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and two runs scored in a 12-6 home loss to Treasure Valley in the nightcap of an NWAC doubleheader on April 11. The former Bulldog standout, batting .266 on the year to go along with a .395 on-base percentage, also had a double and a run scored in the Hawks' 12-2 win over the Chukars in the series' opener. Columba Basin College (16-18) will take on No.7-ranked Yakima Valley College at home today and will face the Yaks on the road on Saturday for a pair of conference games.

Helene Rae, College of Idaho Track & Field

A 2025 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Helene, a freshman thrower, placed second out of 20 competitors in the shot put with a school-record mark of 47 feet, 5 inches at the Northwest Nazarene Open held April 10 and 11 in Nampa. The former Lady Badger standout also finished fourth out of 17 competitors in the hammer throw with a new personal best of 150 feet, 9 inches, and was 10th out of 16 competitors in the discus throw with a toss of 115 feet, 8 inches for the Yotes. Rae, who was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts, beat out a total of 12 NCAA Division II marks across all three events. The College of Idaho will turn their attention towards Lewis & Clark University's Larry Byerly Invitational, set to be held April 17 & 18 in Portland, Ore.

Brayden Lamanna, Treasure Valley CC Track & Field

A 2025 graduate of Priest River High, Brayden, a freshman distance runner, placed seventh out of 36 competitors in the 1,500-meter run with a new personal best time of 4 minutes, 5.36 seconds at the Northwest Nazarene Open held April 10 and 11 in Nampa. The former Spartan standout, who now holds six school records for the Chukars, beat out eight NCAA Division II athletes with the performance. Treasure Valley will compete next on April 17 and 18 at the Lewis & Clark University's Larry Byerly Invitational in Portland, Ore.

Taylor Mire, Lewis-Clark State College Golf

A 2025 graduate of Sandpoint High, Taylor, a freshman, placed 22nd out of 45 golfers as she put together a total gross 23-over-par 169 (89-80) across two rounds at the Tournament of Knights Invitational hosted by Warner Pacific University on April 13 and 14 at the Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, Ore. The former Lady Bulldog standout had two birdies, both of which came during her first round, and 19 pars in total for the Lady Warriors, which finished third out of eight scoring teams. Lewis-Clark State College, ranked No. 18 in the NAIA — their highest ranking since 2014 — will host the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships from April 27 through 29 at Lewiston Golf and Country Club.

Gabe Linck, University of Idaho Lacrosse

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Gabe, a junior attacker, recorded two goals, scooped up two groundballs, and dished out a career-high four assists as the Vandals fell just short in a home game against Washington State, 14-12, in what was a battle between Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League Division I & II rivals.
