St. Ignatius Seniors: Limit the salt intake
Theresa Yares | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 3 hours, 18 minutes AGO
Choose low-sodium options and replace salt with herbs and spices when cooking. Sodium (aka salt) is found in canned goods, frozen meals, condiments, and pickled foods.
Rinsing canned foods can help reduce sodium intake and limit it to one teaspoon per day. Saturated fats is found in butter, lard, coconut oil, whole milk, palm oil and fatty meats. Replace these fats with vegetable oils such as olive or canola oil.
Lean meats, poultry, fish, nuts and seeds are healthier choices. Added sugars are sugars and syrups added to food and drinks during processing. These include sugar-sweetened beverages, candy, baked goods, processed foods and desserts.
Read nutrition labels under the “Total Sugars” as “Added Sugars” and choose foods with little or no added sugar. Water and whole fruits are better choices, according to “Heart Health for Older Americans,” by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.
