A 16-year-old boy is in custody following an alleged truck theft and police chase Saturday evening in Lincoln County.

According to a press release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, at about 6:12 p.m. authorities received a call from a person reporting that three juvenile boys had stolen a pickup truck in the Yaak area and were driving toward Libby on Pipe Creek Road.

The caller was following the juveniles. Lincoln County deputies responded to the Pipe Creek area when they encountered the stolen vehicle, a brown Ford pickup. The vehicle was traveling at a speed more than the posted speed limit of 55 MPH and was crossing over the center line.

Deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver didn't stop, instead turning into the Sheldon Flats area. He then turned around, leaving the paved surface to evade the deputies. Deputies continued to follow the vehicle through Libby and west on U.S. 2 through Troy. The pickup travelled through Troy at speeds of 70 MPH in a posted 25 MPH zone.

Deputies were able to pass the vehicle and perform a boxing maneuver to force the vehicle to stop. The three juveniles were detained without further incident.

The 16-year-old juvenile driver has been charged with three felonies, including theft of a light vehicle, aggravated fleeing from or eluding a peace officer and criminal endangerment.

The driver was transported to Bonner County Juvenile Detention in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Due to the age of the accused, his name will not be published by The Western News.
