Members of the Lt. George Farragut Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution honored Kootenai Junior/Senior High School student Dani Davidson as the winner of the Patriots of the American Revolution Essay Contest during a school assembly April 10.

Dani, a freshman, received the award for her essay titled, “Hamilton’s Revolution.” She was presented with a commemorative medal, certificate and a $200 award. In addition to the top honor, 20 other students were recognized for their participation in this year’s contest.

DAR, with a mission to “Illuminate our legacy,” sponsors annual American history contests for students in grades five through 12, encouraging young people to explore and connect with the individuals and events that shaped the nation. This year marked a significant milestone for the Lt. George Farragut Chapter, which received a record number of submissions thanks in part to the efforts of Kootenai history teacher Bruce Twitchell.

In anticipation of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, this year’s contest challenged students to examine the influential figures of the 1770s — men, women and children whose contributions, large and small, helped drive the American Revolution.

Essays were evaluated by a panel of judges on historical accuracy, organization and creativity. This year’s panel included a retired educator, a published author and a retired U.S. Air Force colonel.

Awards were presented by Regent Kathy Swanson, American History Chair Laurie Jaeger and retired Col. Lisa McLeod, all members of the Lt. George Farragut Chapter of the DAR.

Students recognized for their participation include Aaliyah Beckman, Hailey Buchanan, Samantha Cannon, Brooklyn Charles, Hunter Charles, Sadi Rose Davidson, Bianca Dittman, Harleigh Dutton, Mariah George, Madeline Loucks, Nolan Loucks, Madilyn Lowery, Nikoli McPeak, Cali Mazza, Danielle Myers, Annabelle Parrish, Darian St. John, Hazel Stevenson, Juniper Stevenson and Trinity Ward.
