COEUR d’ALENE — It wasn’t the best ending to the boys basketball season for Lakeland senior Brayden Carrel.

But he’s sure made up for lost time this spring.

During practice in January, Carrel came down a little awkwardly and missed the rest of the basketball season after breaking the left metatarsal bone in his left foot.

“It’s right in the middle of the foot,” Carrel said. “It’s a pretty hard bone to break. It was too bad, but what can you do?”

Carrel, a thrower for the Lakeland track and field team, won for the eighth straight time this season, finishing with a toss of 52 feet, 6 inches to win the boys shot put at the Rasmussen Invitational on Friday at Coeur d’Alene High.

As for any lingering effects to his foot injury, Carrel noted he’s almost fully recovered.

“I’m pretty much healed,” Carrel said. “I can do most of the stuff that I’ve been doing in the throws.”

Carrel, who is 6-foot-8, 250 pounds, received interest to play basketball from Northwest Athletic Conference programs Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Wash., Spokane Colleges and Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore.

“I was thinking about it, but started thinking about my future,” Carrel said. “I decided not to go to college and go into the workforce. I want to get into doing fencing and doing construction.”

Carrel threw a season-high of 53 feet at last week’s Kootenai County Challenge at Timberlake High in Spirit Lake.

“It’s been great,” said Carrel, who was fifth at state in the shot last year, and is ranked second in 5A this year. “I’ve been improving so much in the last few weeks. I just hope to continue to get better.”

Coeur d’Alene finished with 136.5 points to claim the boys team title.

"Our boys had another great meet, scoring in a lot of events," Coeur d'Alene coach Shawn Amos said. "To win our Rasmussen Invitational is a big deal."

Moscow ran away with the girls team title, finishing with 205 points.
