WHITEFISH — Not the home opener the Bulldogs hoped for, but the rebound the Wolfpack needed.

Max Weber hit a crucial two-run double as Glacier defeated Whitefish 5-3 in high school baseball Saturday at Smith Fields.

The win comes a day after Glacier suffered its first loss of the season, a 15-0 defeat to Missoula Sentinel.

“We responded exactly how I asked them to respond,” Glacier coach Erik Brink said. “That speaks volumes. I hate to say that games are a big deal when you lose them, but I think (Friday) night may have done something for us.”

Glacier broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth as Teagan Dixon singled on a bunt. Ryne Gillette scored from second as the throw to first ended up in the dirt.

From there Beau Schulz took over.

Schulz put in four strong innings of relief on the mound, allowing just one run on three hits — all coming in the seventh.

“It’s always a good day when I am on the bump,” Schulz said. “My defense was there, they played really well.

“You have to keep your composure, even if you walk a guy you just have to focus on the next batter, focus on each pitch.”

Glacier added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Weber’s single to right field capitalized on a pair of walks that started the inning.

Whitefish had its chances in the bottom of the seventh.

Reed Boyer and Carter Godsey opened the frame with singles. With two outs, Reyd Hobart singled to drive home Boyer and put runners on the corners for Drew Queen.

Schulz got Queen to ground to second for a game-ending fielder’s choice.

Whitefish held a 2-1 lead in the third after a Tait Orme double to left that scored Luke Dalen.

Glacier responded with a safety squeeze from Ethan Kim that scored Brady Buckmaster to tie the game in the fourth.

“We have taken advantage of (aggressive baserunning) just because we are starting to get the timing down,” Brink said. “They are starting to get good jumps, starting to get good reads.”

Glacier now prepares for the first Crosstown matchup of the season against Flathead at ABS Park Tuesday with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
