PREP TRACK & FIELD ROUNDUP: Three area school records fall on action-packed Saturday
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 3 hours, 9 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 19, 2026 2:30 PM
Two more Sandpoint school records fall at Van Kuren Invite
CHENEY — There's no denying it — these four sprinters aren't just etching their names into the record books at Sandpoint High, they're some of the fastest the North Idaho prep scene has ever seen.
Seniors Maverick Gomez, Isaac Schmit, and Kamren Ziarnick, along with junior Trey Blumenberg, broke multiple school, meet and venue records as they claimed gold in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays at the Van Kuren Invitational held Saturday at Cheney High.
The foursome beat out 15 other top-ranked squads in the 4x200 with a time of 1 minute, 29.98 seconds, a new meet and venue record, and then followed that up by beating out 18 teams in the 4x100 with a time of 42.34 seconds, a new meet, venue, and school record. The previous school record of 42.49 seconds was held by Gomez, Schmit, Ziarnick and Van Lee, set at last year's district championship.
"And they'll keep getting faster the further we get into the season," Sandpoint High head coach Doug Fry said. "Maverick has been dinged up a little bit, but he's back, and running really fast."
Schmit was also fourth out of 60 runners in the 100-meter dash (10.86) and fifth out of 50 runners in the 200-meter dash (22.49 seconds) with a pair of season bests. Blumenberg trailed not too far behind, placing fifth in the 100 (11.05) and eighth in the 200 (22.72) with a couple of personal bests.
Sandpoint High junior Knox Williams was third out of 53 in the 400-meter dash (51.42), senior Paul Kent was third out of 45 in the 3200-meter run (9:42.83) and junior Damian Porter was fourth out of 60 in the discus (141 feet, 4 inches) for the Bulldogs, which placed third out 31 scoring teams.
Sandpoint High's girls were equally as impressive, breaking a school record of their own on the day.
Junior Elizabeth Storms and sophomores Lillian Grant, Ruthie Laughridge and Delaney Barron placed second out of 11 teams in the 4x800 relay with a new school record time of 9 minutes, 51.96 seconds — just .59 seconds behind Gonzaga Prep's gold-medal squad. The previous school record of 10 minutes, 4 seconds was held by YeoWon Yarnell, Kali Scheel, Katherine Kaul and eventual Utah State standout Hannah Davidson, set at the Christina Finney Co-ed Relays in 2017.
"It's really phenomenal, and the kids are embracing it," Coach Fry added about more school records being broken. "They're loving working together and appear to be really settled."
Storms continued a stellar day when she beat out 29 other competitors to win the 800-meter run in a personal best time of 2 minutes, 19.69 seconds, which ranks as No. 4 all-time in school history. Laughridge was fourth in the event with a new personal best time of 2 minutes, 24.52 seconds.
Senior Izzy Davidson was fourth out of 18 in the pole vault (10 feet), senior Jasmin Laing tied for fifth out 41 in the high jump (5 feet), and senior Elia Howard was fifth out of 59 in the 100-meter dash (12.62) and seventh out of 52 in the 200-meter dash (26.16) for the Lady Bulldogs, which placed sixth out of 28 scoring teams.
Sandpoint will split their team between the 25th annual Priest River Invitational and the Legends Twilight Invitational in Walla Walla this coming Saturday.

Priest River's Porinchok breaks discus record again at Pasco Invite
PASCO — Niki Porinchok continues to show why he's one of the best throwers this region has to offer.
The standout senior finished third out of 47 competitors in the discus with a new school record toss of 168 feet, 9 inches — over six feet ahead of his previous school record — as he led the Spartans at the Pasco Invite held Saturday at Edgar Brown Stadium.
Porinchok's throw in the event now ranks as fifth in the entire state and is the best throw in Bonner County history, beating out Jason Duchow's throw of 168 feet, 4 inches for Sandpoint High at the A1 State Track & Field Championships in 1992.
Porinchok was also 18th out of 48 in the shot put with a mark of 46 feet, 1.5 inches and senior Ian Lamanna cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to finish seventh out of 31 competitors in the pole vault for Priest River, which competed against some of the best athletes across 78 schools from the Pacific Northwest at the event.
Priest River hosts Bonners Ferry and Troy (Mont.) on Monday for a non-league double dual.
Clark Fork's Hudson posts a pair of personal bests at Libby Invite
LIBBY — Kingston Hudson is starting to make a name for himself.
The standout freshman was third out of 15 competitors in the triple jump with a new personal best of 37 feet, 11.5 inches and placed sixth out of 21 competitors in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 5 inches — also a personal best — as he helped the Wampus Cats to a 10th-place finish out of 11 teams at the Libby Invite held Saturday at Logger Stadium.
Senior Westin Caven was third in the 300-meter hurdles (43.87) and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.58) for Clark Fork, which was the only non-Montana school in attendance.
In girls' action, Vanessa Rogier pieced together some more strong showings for the Lady Cats. The standout freshman was second out of 16 in the long jump (14 feet, 10.5 inches), seventh out of 15 in the triple jump (30 feet, 1.25 inches), and eighth out of 15 in the 200-meter dash (30.42) as she compiled all eight points for Clark Fork.
The Wampus Cats will be back in action this Friday for the Timberlake Invitational.
