More trees for Tubbs

The city of Coeur d’Alene had a contractor planting seedlings on Tubbs Hill this week as part of the Fuel Mitigation project that has been ongoing since last fall.
This portion of the project is being funded by the city as part of the grant match for the project. The total contracted amount of fuel mitigation work associated with the Western States Fuel Management Grant is $240,000.
All seedlings planted are native to Tubbs Hill and include a mix of 65% larch, 20% white pine, and 15% Ponderosa pine, a press release said.
Contractors planted a total of 500 seedlings, with 300 protected by Vexar tubes and 200 treated with Trico deer repellent. Each tree has been marked with tubes and wire stake flags to make it easier to locate during survival inspections and a release spray application planned for later this spring following green-up.
Phase two of the fuel mitigation project is scheduled to begin this summer. Portions of the area have been marked with red ribbon. Snags to be cut are marked with white spray paint.
The city asks visitors to Tubbs Hill not to pull up tubing or remove flags.
