FIELD IS SAGGING

War Memorial Field is sagging and must be rescued, said SHS athletic director and head football coach Cotton Barlow, who pleaded the case before the county commissioners. As a result, a county engineer will stake out the field for a face-lifting operation. According to Barlow the field sags nearly a foot in the middle due to the fact that it is not crowned. Thus, rain water and melting snows permeate the field, sinking the earth beneath so that many depressions potmark the field. The way to correct the situation is to remove the turf and crown the field with fill dirt, then re-sod the field. Barlow does not plan to roll back the turf for the operation and then roll it back on. In his estimation, much of the turf is “not worth saving.” Instead new turf will be brought in after the crowning has been completed. The re-surfacing work will be done by volunteers and spearheaded by the Bulldog Bench. The new sod will run about $4,000, said Barlow, who is presently trying to raise the money for the project. He hopes the job will begin within a few weeks.
