PREP ROUNDUP: Orofino softball edges Timberlake

SOFTBALL

SPIRIT LAKE — Sophomore Shae Jones of 4A Timberlake struck out 16 and had two hits, but the visiting 3A Orofino Maniacs held on to edge the Tigers 3-2 on Monday in a matchup of two of the top teams in their respective classifications. 

Jones walked none and allowed three hits for Timberlake (6-6), which trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Nova Gonzales was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a double by jones and scored on a passed ball. Courtesy runner Kenzie Jezek scored on a groundout. 

But Reece Deyo of Orofino (12-2) struck out the next two batters, and reliever Peytyn Chaffee retired the Tigers in order in the seventh. 

All three of Orofino’s runs were unearned. 

Timberlake travels to St. Maries on Wednesday for a doubleheader.

MOSCOW — Cooper Miller of Wallace was fourth with an 82, Johnny Stovern of Kellogg sixth with an 84 at the Potlatch Invitational at the University of Idaho Golf Course. 

Ambrose of Meridian, with all four scorers in the 80s, won the boys tournament with a 345, 21 strokes ahead of Priest River. Kellogg was fifth at 372. 

Chase Lovell of Potlatch was medalist with a 4-over-par 76. Patrick Young of Bonners was second with a 77. 

Kellogg’s girls finished third, St. Maries fourth. Ambrose shot 385 and won by 39 strokes over Logos.  

Rylee Jarvey of Kellogg was fourth with a 96.
