OPINION: See you at the starting line, May 19
SARAH MARTIN/Guest Opinion | Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 weeks, 4 days AGO
In less than a month, on May 19, voters will choose who will appear on the ballot this November.
In a Republican-dominated state like Idaho, many Conservative candidates believe this is their finish line. For Democrats, May 19 is just the start.
Calls for something better are coming from all corners of politics. Once again, every voter in Idaho will have a Democratic candidate fighting for their support. And while an official announcement is forthcoming, it is looking very likely that voters will be able to have their say this November in improving women’s healthcare across the state.
Idahoans have real concerns that the GOP isn’t addressing.
We have a Congress that refuses to hold the executive branch accountable. We have a state legislature that is plowing Idaho into a $1 billion deficit. And we have a governor who cares more about Republican optics than funding education.
That’s why as Kootenai County Democrats, we are proud to support Kaylee Peterson for United States Congress. Kaylee has a back bone of steel, the talent to debate anyone, and the ability to translate Idaho values into Washington DC policy.
For the U.S. Senate, David Roth is a Democrat’s Democrat. He holds active leadership roles with the Democratic National Committee, upholds affordability as a central pillar of his campaign, and made history as a champion for LGBTQ + rights.
In the race for governor, Idaho, Democrats have three phenomenal choices: Terri Pickens, Maxine Durand, and Jill Kirkham. Frankly, among the party, you will find pockets of support for all three. Vote your conscience and do your research. Part of that research could be tuning in to a debate hosted by the Idaho young Democrats on Sunday, April 26 at 5 p.m. MST. As you move farther down-ballot, Idaho Democratic races are uncontested. That’s because it is really the best-of-the-best who are running. From superintendent of public instruction to your local representative, the Democrats running uncontested care deeply about Idaho. They all bring education, expertise, and firsthand knowledge to politics.

Democrats know that Idahoans are craving something better. We’re tired of voting for “the best-of-the-bad options.”
This column will be paused until after the primary elections. May 19 is our starting line. We’ll see you there.
