PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint softball celebrates senior night with wins over Bonners Ferry
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 hour, 30 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 22, 2026 1:00 AM
SOFTBALL
Sandpoint 20, Bonners Ferry 2 (5)
SANDPOINT — It didn't exactly go as planned, but if there are two teams dressed and ready to play on a sunny spring day in North Idaho, those teams aren't going to pass up the opportunity.
Monday's games were originally scheduled to be official contests, but Bonners Ferry was short a player, and due to IHSAA guidelines, were forced to forfeit the non-league doubleheader. With a senior night on tap for Sandpoint, the two squads decided to participate in a pair of scrimmages anyways.
Sophomore Marlee Stevens was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBIs in total as the Lady Bulldogs compiled 11 extra-base hits in a game one win over the Lady Badgers.
Sophomore Taylor Bannick was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, junior Teagan Newsom was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a double and a triple of her own, and senior Arah Stevens was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and yet another double and a triple for Sandpoint, which scored 19 of their 20 runs across the first two innings.
Hailey Dickson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and RBIs for Bonners Ferry, which was outhit 13-5 by the Lady Bulldogs.
In the circle, sophomore Bailey Wilson struck out five batters, as did Marlee Stevens, and senior Lilli Marti recorded the first double of her career for Sandpoint during the scrimmage.

SANDPOINT — Senior Cadence Skibitsky, one of three seniors for Sandpoint, led the way with a 2-for-2 effort that included a two-run triple, junior Zxyloh Hull-Johnson recorded the first double and triple of her career, and the Lady Bulldogs called it a tie with the Lady Badgers during the second game of Monday's scrimmages.
Skibitsky, senior Arah Stevens, and senior Lilli Marti all served as the team's captains on the night and were honored for their efforts over the years prior to the start of game two.
"Although this senior class is small, it has made a significant impact on the program," Sandpoint High head coach Leah Platt said of Stevens, Skibitsky and Marti. "It has been rewarding to watch these athletes grow and mature, not only in the game of softball but also as young adults. Along the way, they have worked through challenges, built relationships, and learned from their mistakes to become stronger leaders."
"It is our hope that the lessons they’ve gained — from their coaches, teammates, and the softball program — will continue to serve them well in the future," coach Platt continued. "At the same time, each of them has left a lasting impression on the program, and we are grateful for all that we have learned from them."
Junior Teagan Newsom whiffed seven batters over three innings in the circle while sophomore Bailey Wilson recorded five more strikeouts across two innings in the nightcap. Arah Stevens doubled and sophomore Marlee Stevens tripled to round out the extra-base hits on the day for Sandpoint (8-10), which hosts Lewiston on Saturday for a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader.

Lamanna breaks pole vault school record
TRACK & FIELD
BONNERS FERRY — Ian Lamanna's been working on his craft, and that hard work paid off Monday.
The standout senior cleared 14 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault to win the event — a new school record by one inch — and beat out 12 other competitors in the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 2 inches, which ranks as No. 2 all-time in school history, as the Spartans headed north for a non-league double dual with Bonners and Troy (Mont.).
The previous school record of 14 feet, 6 inches was held by Corbin Maltba, set at the 3A District 1 Championships in 2017. Lamanna is just 2.5 inches away from the long jump school record, held by Juan Garces, who posted a jump of 21 feet, 4.5 inches in 1985.
Senior Niki Porinchok added a win in the discus (148 feet, 5 inches) and was third in the shot put (42 feet, 1 inch) for Priest River, which defeated Troy in dual scoring.
Junior Riley Beggerly won the 100-meter dash (11.74), was part of the winning 4x100 relay (45.31), won the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and was second in the long jump (20 feet, 10.5 inches) for Bonners Ferry's boys, which swept the event.
In girls' action, junior Ashlynn Korff was second in the 100-meter dash (14.19), second in the 200-meter dash (29.66) and third in the long jump (13 feet, 9.25 inches) for the Lady Spartans, which defeated Troy in dual scoring.
Junior Eva Willis won the long jump (16 feet, 1 inch), the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches) and the 100-meter dash (13.67) for the Lady Badgers, which swept the event.
Priest River will host the 29th Annual Priest River Invitational this Saturday in which nine area school are expected to attend.
