Shane H Skelton, 63
Valley Press-Mineral Independent | UPDATED 2 hours, 35 minutes AGO
Shane Skelton, of St. Regis, passed away on March 31, 2026, at the age of 63.
Born on October 4, 1962, to Nora and Harold Skelton, Shane grew up in St. Regis, where he developed a lifelong love for fast cars, open roads, earthwork, and the rugged beauty of the West. A proud graduate of St. Regis High School, he served as valedictorian — and chief rebel rouser — of the Class of 1981, a combination that surprised no one who knew him.
Shane built a long and accomplished career in excavation and construction, working across Washington, Montana, Alaska, Arizona, the Dakotas, and beyond. Over the decades, he contributed to projects ranging from roads and homes to park-and-rides, museums, helipads, and IMAX theaters. If it needed dirt moved, rock shifted, or a plan improvised on the fly, Shane was the one people called — a man who could quite literally move mountains, often with a grin. He was known just as much for his spirit as for his skill.
Shane raced cars and collected more than a few trophies. He loved fishing the creek and playing best ball with his son, Chase. He was always the first to lend a hand to friends and neighbors, whether the job required a tool, a truck, or someone who simply knew how to get things done. Shane was the best drinking and cribbage buddy anyone could ask for — always quick with a joke or story. Shane lived boldly, laughed heartily, and did nothing halfway.
Shane is survived by his mother Nora, his brother Chad, his sister Jolie, his son Chase, his niece Tia, and many cousins across Mineral County. He was preceded in death by his father Harold and by his partner Jannise.
The family will hold a private gathering to spread his ashes and honor his memory. Shane will be deeply missed, and his stories, laughter and legacy will live on in the people and places he touched.
