Sidelines: Bottled up action ready to flow freely

Let them go, let them flow.

It’s as if all the spring sports of 2026 have been crammed into a bottle with nowhere to go these past several weeks, with the recent consistently inconsistent weather acting as a stopper holding all the action in.

In the most recent examples of action stoppage, the two-day golf tournament scheduled for the Tobacco Valley course in Eureka Wednesday and Thursday was scrapped last week due to winter-like spring weather in Lincoln County, and Plains’ softball game with Thompson Falls in Plains was likewise washed away.

Finally, late last week, the sun won out and athletes were able to get out and compete, and the pent-up action exploded all over the place, in the form of track and field meets, golf tournaments and tennis matches.

Now that the stopper has been pulled and the bottleneck cleared at last, seemingly all at once, the sports will finally begin to flow freely this spring of 2026. It is time to guzzle from the bottle of local sports, to take a deep drink and sate the thirst for unrequited action. Let the sun finally shine down on uninterrupted sports.

It all starts Tuesday at Previs Field with the running of the Thompson Falls Invitational high school track meet where virtually all local schools will appear. That same day in Noxon, the Red Devils are scheduled to host Bigfork for a high school baseball game.

The action turns toward softball, tennis and golf Thursday as Plains will play MAC in a big Western B-C showdown at Mission, the Superior tennis team will play a match at Troy and Thompson Falls will host its annual Gary Thompson Invitational tournament at River’s Bend.

Softball and baseball take center stage Friday as Thompson Falls hosts MAC and Plains visits Eureka in softball, while Noxon travels to Mission for a baseball game.

The biggest thing going in local sports Saturday will be the Seeley-Swan Invitational track and field meet at MCPS Stadium in Missoula, and most local teams are expected to compete.

The Superior tennis team will be in Anaconda and Butte Saturday to face the Copperheads and Maroons in a pair of dual matches.

And oh yeah, Eurkea’s two-day golf tourney at Tobacco Valley described earlier has tentatively been moved to April 27 and 28, while Plains’ softball game with Thompson Falls has been rescheduled to April 27 in Plains.

Let’s hope the days of bottlenecks and rescheduling events has passed and we can cruise on through the rest of the spring without delays.
