Boundary County Homeschool Prom returns with theme “In Full Bloom”

Boundary County’s homeschool community will once again come together in June for an evening of music, dancing and connection at the annual homeschool prom.
Set for Saturday, June 13, this year’s prom will be held at the Riverside Event Center.
Inspired by Japanese cherry blossom and lantern festivals, the theme for 2026 is “In Full Bloom,”
Organizer Brandee Burt, who has organized the event for several years, said planning for this year’s prom began in February and now includes a broader team effort.
“This year, the planning team has expanded to include a dedicated group known as the ‘Prom Moms,’” Burt said. “This collaborative effort allows for greater support and shared responsibility in bringing the event to life for the home-educated community.”
The homeschool prom in Boundary County was originally started by a local community member. When she relocated her studies, Burt stepped in to continue the tradition, alongside several other homeschooling mothers.
Approximately 50 students are expected to attend this year’s event, which is open to home-educated and private school students ages 13 to 18, as well as 19-year-old recent graduates. While nearby areas, including Bonner County, have begun hosting similar events, students from those regions are still welcome.
The evening will feature music from professional DJ John Becker of Forerunner Entertainment, along with decorations, and refreshments.
In addition to dancing, attendees can participate in group line dances such as the Virginia Reel, as well as games including musical chairs and cornhole. Designated photo areas will also be available for students to capture memories from the night.
Organizers emphasize that creating a safe and welcoming environment is a top priority. The event will include on-site supervision from organizers and trusted young adults, as well as a “parent parlor” area where parents can remain during the event.
A modest formal dress code will also be in place.
The prom has become an important social opportunity for homeschool students in the area, offering a chance to build friendships and strengthen connections within the community.
“This prom serves as a vital bridge for the home-educated community,” Burt said. “It’s a night designed to celebrate the joy of community and shared experiences.”
As the event has grown, organizers are now seeking additional support from the community. In past years, the prom has been largely self-funded by the organizers, but local businesses and donors have begun to get involved with financial sponsorships and in-kind donations. Organizers say that community support through social media engagement and word of mouth promotion is also highly valued.
Current sponsors and supporters include Dr. Rick Ballard, Shelman Realty, North Country Construction, Teen’s Dress Barn, Gathering Place, Jitterz, and Two Brews.
Tickets are available for $10 with pre-purchase, with higher pricing at the door. Organizers encourage early registration to secure the best rate.
In addition, one of the “Prom Moms” will be offering affordable prom dress rentals, with more details to be announced.
Looking ahead, organizers hope to continue building the event as a reliable annual tradition, with the potential to expand into additional gatherings such as a winter formal.
