Glenda Joy Franklin, 92, was a remarkable woman who lived a full, well-traveled and family-centered life, no small accomplishment considering she raised five children while moving more than 20 times across two countries, nine states and at least 13 towns.

Born on Sept. 26, 1933, on her grandfather’s farm in Amber, Wash., Joy grew up in Cheney. In high school, she met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Franklin. They stayed in Cheney while Bob was a student at Eastern Washington University, and together they embarked on a 65-year marriage that featured frequent relocations, many adventures and no shortage of patience and love. Wherever the family landed, Joy turned the space into a home and built a community from scratch.

After successfully raising five children and becoming empty nesters, Joy and Bob settled for 20 years in Rochester, N.Y. Then in 2002, they moved across the country one last time to a custom-built home in North Idaho to enjoy their golden years closer to family and near where their lives began.

Known for her sharp mind, quiet wit, impeccable poise and listening ear, Joy had a way of appearing effortlessly pulled together under any circumstance. She will be remembered as a just and fair human being — open-minded to different people and perspectives, but with a strong moral compass and a commitment to treating others fairly and with respect.

A dedicated member of Beta Sigma Phi International sorority since 1959, Joy maintained lifelong friendships and, after Bob’s passing in 2018, continued living largely independently, regularly attending aqua aerobics and social gatherings into her 90s.

Joy passed away Feb. 17, 2026, in Post Falls, Idaho. She is survived by her five beloved children — Lori Brady, Amy Vancho, Shelly Mawby, John Franklin and Jim Franklin — also, her brother Tom Davis, 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.

Epitomizing her name, Joy led a joyful life marked by resilience, adaptability and love. A true and beloved matriarch, she will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

Services will be held at Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5909 S. Cheney Spokane Road, Spokane, Wash., on Friday, May 8, 2026, 2-4 p.m.
