Local comedy venue Levity Theatre is launching a brand-new format for its popular improv classes starting in May: A two-week Improv Basics course, created for those who want to get into improv but haven’t been able to commit to a four- or eight-week course.

“This is the first time we’ve offered a two-week class,” Levity Theatre founder and improviser Noah Johnson said in a Wednesday news release. “In the past, we’ve run four-week and eight-week courses, but we wanted to create something more accessible for people with busy schedules. This is a great way to jump in without a long-term commitment.”

Open to all levels, this course requires no prior experience and no pressure to be funny. Participants will explore improvisation through simple exercises, engaging games and foundational concepts in a supportive, low-stakes environment.

Over four sessions from May 4-12, students will learn core improv principles such as spontaneity, connection, collaboration, embracing failure and being in the moment. The course condenses the material from Levity Theatre’s established four-week Improv Basics curriculum into a dynamic, twice-a-week class.

“You don’t have to be ‘funny’ to do improv,” Johnson said. “Whoever you are is enough, and anyone can do it. The goal is to build confidence, connect with others and maybe laugh harder than you have in a long time.”

Participants often find that improv skills extend far beyond the stage, Johnson said, helping with communication, creativity and everyday interactions.

“Improv is really about saying, ‘Yes, and…’ to life,” Johnson said. “This class is an invitation to try something new, take a small risk and discover what you’re capable of.”

Limited spots are available. Early registration is encouraged.

Classes will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. May 4, 5, 11 and 12 at First Presbyterian Church.

The course is $80 per person.

First Presbyterian is at 521 E. Lakeside Ave., Coeur d'Alene.
