'Suddenly in Command' training prepares boaters for emergencies

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary urges boaters and passengers to prepare for the unexpected by participating in a focused safety training designed to build confidence and capability on the water.

Recreational boating remains a safe and widely enjoyed activity; however, risk increases significantly when a vessel operator becomes incapacitated or an emergency occurs. The 2024 national fatality rate was 4.8 deaths per 100,000 registered vessels, while Idaho reported a higher rate of 7.84 deaths per 100,000 vessels in 2023. In many cases, outcomes depend on whether someone else onboard can take control during those critical first moments.

Whether due to a medical emergency, a fall overboard or sudden weather changes, passengers may be forced to assume command without warning. Without preparation, hesitation increases risk. With preparation, decisive action can save lives.

To address this need, the Lake Pend Oreille Flotilla will offer a “Confidence in Boating” class focused on essential knowledge and situational awareness required to safely operate a vessel during an emergency. The training will be held May 2 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the U.S. Forestry Building, 1602 Ontario St., in Sandpoint. The cost is $7 per individual or $10 per family, for up to four people. This training directly supports the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s recreational boating safety mission by strengthening prevention and improving readiness.

The class is open to boaters, passengers, families and older children — anyone who may need to take control of a vessel during an emergency. Participants will gain a practical understanding of basic vessel control, emergency awareness and decision-making under pressure.

Preparedness on the water is a responsibility, not an option.

Do not assume someone else will know what to do. Do not wait until an emergency forces the decision.

Register today to help ensure someone on your vessel is ready to take command.
