NIC SOFTBALL: Roberts helps Cardinals snap losing skid

WORLEY — Aspen Roberts, a freshman outfielder from Riverton, Utah, hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to rally North Idaho College to a 3-1 win over Utah State-Eastern of Price, Utah, in the second game for a split of a Scenic West Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at the Marimn Health Coeur Center on Friday.
NIC (15-30, 7-15 SWAC), which is third in the conference, leads fourth-place Utah State-Eastern (13-21, 6-16) by one game. Snow (13-29, 7-20) is in fifth in the five-team league. The top four teams advance to the Region 18 Tournament at the site of the conference champion starting on May 12.
Freshman Elizabeth Hatch singled to score sophomore Alli Drake to give NIC a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Lilly McNett struck out six in the second game for NIC, which had lost 10 of its previous 11 games in conference.
Jayda Spight hit a three-run double in the bottom of the first inning of the first game for Utah State-Eastern.
The teams meet again today in Worley in a doubleheader starting at noon.
