PREP ROUNDUP: Post Falls advances to 6A district title series

POST FALLS — At this point, you’ve got to go with what you have and hope to move forward.
For Post Falls on Friday, it might have turned out better than expected.
Seniors Michael O’Connor and Gavin Wienker combined to allow four hits and strike out nine as the second-seeded Post Falls Trojans beat the third-seeded Lake City Timberwolves 7-1 in a 6A District 1 loser-out game on Friday at Post Falls High.
Post Falls (10-8) advances to the best-of-3 district championship series against top-seeded Coeur d’Alene (9-6), with Game 1 on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Ted Page Field in Coeur d’Alene. Game 2 is next Thursday at Post Falls, with an if-necessary game at Coeur d’Alene High next Saturday.
“Our plan with a single game and rest in between was to use everyone we had,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “Mike was going to start on the mound, and we were going to come with Gavin and close it with Caden (Perkins). Wienker kept getting stronger as the game went on, so we kept in him in there.”
Lake City finishes 5-16 in coach Gil Pierce’s first season.
Junior Ben Carrasco hit a two-run go-ahead single in the third inning for Post Falls, which scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead.
“We had a couple of good swings and hits, and it was really nice with Ben coming up and clearing the bases,” Reese said. “That really got us going.”

Timberlake 9-13
Bonners Ferry 4-0
SPIRIT LAKE — The Tigers got back to the basics, with the reward of having the path to the state 4A tournament come through John Shaffer Field starting on Tuesday.
Junior Nate Beardsall had four RBIs in the first game, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Timberlake.
“Nate had a huge game,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “Not a lot of kids go yard in our park. We got guys on and when we needed a big time hit, we had kids step up and come through.”
Beardsall also drove in four runs in the second game for Timberlake (11-8, 2-1 IML), which claimed the league title over Bonners Ferry (5-15, 1-2), which claimed the league opener on April 17.
The teams will play a best-of-3 championship series, with all three games (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) at John Shaffer Field. With the win on April 17, had Bonners Ferry split, the Badgers would have won the league title.
“We just controlled what we could a lot better today,” Johnson said. “We played a lot cleaner and didn’t beat ourselves with errors, and responded when those happened. We played small ball, ran the bases well and didn’t leave a lot of guys on base.”
